Against the Mushroom Synagogue.
The annual return to the synagogue, on
the occasion of the High Holy Days, re-
news also the perennial problem created
by the formation of the "mushroom syna-
gogue" by persons and groups seeking to
capitalize on the most solemn religious
period of the year for Jews.
Again we hear the plea of existing con-
gregations against the temporary syna-
gogues which spring up for a three-day
existence just before Rosh Hashonah, to
disappear again until the following New
Year. The synagogues are justified in their
complaints. There is no justification for
the existence of such "mushroom" houses
of worship, and they not only should not
be encouraged but should be vehemently
condemned by all Jews.
The argument might be used that many
who are unaffiliated with a synagogue find
it less expensive to go to "mushroom syna-
gogue" services. Even from a practical
standpoint alone, ignoring the element of
injustice to existing congregations, this is
no longer true. With the leading Conserva-
tive synagogue of Detroit, Shaarey Zedek,
conducting supplementary services for non-
members, at a very nominal charge; with
similar services being continued for the
fifteenth consecutive year by Temple Beth
El, at a similarly nominal charge, there can
no longer be the excuse on the ground of
expense. Besides, worshippers who attend
services at regularly functioning syna-
gogues are assured of religious services
marked by dignity and devoid of the com-
mercialism which must taint the services
arranged for profit.
Once again, an organized community
should battle against the "mushroom syna-
gogue."
Isaac Don Levine on Russia.
When Arabs Resort to Trickery.
There is no limit to the trickery of which
the shrewd Arab is capable.
It is a well known fact that the extent
of Jewish immigration to Palestine depends
almost entirely on the absorbtive capacity
of the land and on the amount of unem-
ployment existing at the time provision for
additional settlers is made. The Arabs are
aware of this, and with an artfulness that
is unexcelled use every means possible to
curtail Jewish immigration and thereby
check the progress of the Jewish commun-
ity in a revived, redeemed and rebuilt Jew-
ish National Home.
How do they do it? The Arabs have
learned how to pad their own lists of unem-
ployed in such a manner as to make it
appear that excessive unemployment in the
land calls for the curtailment of the influx
of Jews into the country. A. E. Knoch, ed-
itor of Unsearchable Riches, a religious
publication, describes the artfulness of the
Arabs, and he quotes the following from
the Palestine Hebrew daily Dever in relat-
ing the story of an investigation of a
Mukhtar's (native agent's) monthly report
on Arab unemployed in a certain district:
Isaac Don Levine, author of "Stalin" and
of "Red Smoke," recognized as an out-
standing authority on conditions in Soviet
Russia, presents interesting views on the
status of Jewry under Communist rule.
Of particular, interest is Mr. Levine's
conviction that the present policies of the
Stalin regime cannot survive, that the dic-
tatorship is exceedingly oppressive and
that a brighter day is due for Russia with
a change in administration. These views
may be gleaned from his "Red Smoke,"
recently reviewed in these columns, and
similar conclusions must be reached upon
reading the statement he made to The De-
troit Jewish Chronicle.
In replying to the questions submitted
to him by the editor, Mr. Levine reveals
the plight in which Russian Jewry finds
itself, and the oppression to which Judaism
and Hebraic culture are subjected. But
he evinces a note of optimism—that the
more powerful Jewish passion for justice
must survive.
While many thousands of sympathizers
with Soviet Russia are fascinated by events
occurring there, for the Jewish people the
Communist regime is marked with tragedy.
Although there are no pogroms under Com-
munist rule, the massacre of everything
Jewish and Hebraic is complete. So much
is this true that many among our people
have learned to look upon Russia's 3,000,-
000 Jews as lost to Judaism. Mr. Levine
offers a ray of hope in the statement which
we are pleased to publish in this issue.
Sustained throughout the centuries by an
undying hope, this note of optimism at least
serves to relieve Jewry from fears that
Russian Jews are not altogether lost to the
entire body of Israel. .

A record of unusual significance is that
of the J. Kauffmann Verlag of Frankfort-
am-Main which is now observing its one-
hundredth anniversary. During an entire
century, the Kauffmann family has pro-
duced and sold Hebrew books and has to
this day retained an enviable reputation
for its service as book dealers. The Kauff-
mann firm is perhaps the world's best
known dealer in second-hand Hebrew
books, and its owners are said to have been
responsible for the preservation of some of
the most important of the rare Hebrew
book treasures.
The story of the rise of this firm is a veri-
table romance Isaac Kauffmann, founder
of the firm, came to Frankfort from Buch-
sweiler, in Alsace, in March of 1832. To
be able to continue his Talmudic studies
in preparation for the rabbinate, under
Rabbi Salomon Trier, he brought with him
a number of Hebrew books and from their
sale he hoped to raise the funds necessary
to support him during his studies. The sale
