Article on Schoenberg's
"Gurre-Lieder" Commended.

CORONER

Editor, Detroit Jewish Chronicle:
The review by A. Morris which
appeared in The Chronicle of
July 20 of Schoenberg's "Gurre-
Lieder" aroused my interest so
that I acquired a set of these rec.
onls, notwithstanding the very
high price. Lovers of music un-
derstand what it means to have •
burning desire to hear a work by
a great modern composer which
has been highly recommended. I
am not sorry, although the invest-
ment of $28 was made at a sacri-
fice of more urgent necessities.
Nuw that I know this great mu-
sic. I would like a confirmation
of the statement by Mr. Morris
that Schoenberg is a Jew. Several
times before I read similar state-
ments, but nowhere did I see sub-
stantial proof. We read so often
about great men being Jews who
turn out to be devout Christians
that one is disinclined to accept
such a statement without further
evidence. Could you or some
reader enlighten me as to the
facts? No doubt, many others
will be interested!
I wish to express my thanks to
you for the highly informative
feature on recorded music, which
is a great help to music-lovers.
Respectfully yours,
Arthur L. Roth.
