Elba, Buchalter and Rachel Sulk*.
Now on Hmhalutx Farm
Training as Pioneer..

The spirit of the pioneer is beck-
oning to the American Jewish
youth, with the result that an addi-
tional group of Chalutzim is soon
to leave this country for Pales-
tine. Among the pioneers who are
shortly to leave for Palestine will
be Elkan Buchhalter and Rachel
Sulkes of Detroit, both graduates
and for the past two years teachers
of the United Hebrew Schools.
The two Detroiters are at present
training for Palestine work on a
farm of the Hechalutz at Parkville,
Md. Writing to his aunt, Mrs. Jos-
eph H. Ehrlich, from this farm,
Elkan Buchhalter says:
, "Our farm is very much in the
experimental stage. The site we
use is ours owing to the bounty of
an individual. The project is not
self-supporting. The earnings of
the milk we sell always leaves a
deficit which is usually defrayed
by interested Jews in Baltimore.
We hope to become entirely self-
supporting when our chicken coop
is completed. Our advisor is Jos-
eph Ettinger, son of Dr. A. Ettin-
ger, well-known agriculturalist
connected with the Jewish National
Fund.
If our crops are successful our
fowl supply for the winter is as-
sured.
We are eight. Three leave for
Palestine in November. We shall
increase the number if conditions
Permit. The land we are now work-
ing is not particularly favorable.
We should like to have a group of
20 of 30.
"The Ilechalutz in America
wishes to organize such training
farms not only in this vicinity but
throughout the U. S. The eyes of
interested groups and individuals
are awainting the outcome of our
efforts.
"The University of Maryland
sends us extension course material
which proves very helpful. This
material we study in the evenings,
besides our study of Zionist his-
tory, Palestine geography, etc."

The twenty-third annual Yom
Kippur night dance of Bicur Chol-
em Jrs. will be held at the General
Motors Ballroom on Monday eve-
ning, Oct. 10. Arrangements are
being made to feature a nationally
known orchestra together with
other entertaining novelties. The
grand march is planned to be led
by Governor and Mrs. Wilbur M.
Snicker. Letters of acceptance to
the invitations forwarded to prom-
inent people of this city have been
received by the society. The names
of those who will participate in
the march will be disclosed in the
near future. Nothing is being
spared to make this the outstanding
affair of the year.
On the first Wednesday in Sep-
tember, an open forum is to take
place at the Shaarey Zedek Syna-
gogue. A prominent speaker will
be followed by refreshment; and
dancing. The sole purpose of this
open meeting is to get the young
