The sixtieth birthday of Jacob de Haas,
pioneer Zionist leader, observed on August
13, should not be permitted to go by un-
noticed. A friend of the late Dr. Theodor
Ilerzl, whose secretary he was for a time,
he must therefore be classed among the
first Zionists. Author, • lecturer, editor,
Zionist organizer, he has made numerous
contributions to American-Jewish life for
which he deserves the gratitude and good
wishes of his people. For arousing the
interest of Louis D. Brandeis in Zionism,
for writing the noteworthy biography of
Theodor Herzl and for the strength he
brought to the Zionist movement in this
country, he especially has earned the grati-
tude of Zionists.
