power since the Pilsudski regime
came about in 1926. Not even in its
honeymoon period, when the head
of the government was Professor
Bartel, a true liberal and democrat,
an honest and courageous states-
man.
Nevertheless, the Pilsudski re-
gime has several times, under the
pressure of public opinion at home
and abroad, and influenced by other
important considerations, attempt-
ed to deal with the Jewish demands,
only to retreat each time without
doing a thing.
It is enough that as soon as the
government even thinks of conced-
ing a Jewish demand, that the anti-
Semites should start shouting and
the whole thing comes to nothing.
The government shrinks back
afraid, and there is an end of it.
It does not matter how slight, how
elementary it may be, often de-
mands which the leaders of the
anti-Semitic National Democratic
Party themselves started to carry
into effect under the pressure of
foreign public opinion when they
were the government of the day.
In some cases, the weakness of
the present government "with
the strong hand" is such that even
the worst anti-Jewish governments
in Poland were never quite so bad.
JEWS LOSE JOBS
It will be enough to take up the
budgets of the government and of
the various town councils to gee
immediately that there are not only

no signs of any improvements in
respect to the Jewish demands, but
that on the contrary, there is a
progressive decline. Expenditure
for Jewish purposes has every-
where been reduced to the bare mini-
mum, and the reduction and econ-
omies which have been effected be-
cause of the serious financial situa-
tion of the country have been dis-
proportionate at the expense of the
Jewish population and their insti-
tutions.
There is an increasing tendency
to clear all Jewish workers and em-
ployees out of all official positions
and out of all official institutions.
Even those few Jews who have suc-
ceeded in finding such positions in
the temporary summer seasonal
work. And no other Jews are put
on.
I am not speaking of those Jew-
ish proposals which need grants of
money to carry them through. The
Jewish representatives demanded
that something should be done
about the Compulsory Sunday
Closing Law, which is ruining the
Jewish population by compelling
Jewish shopkeepers to keep closed
for two days in the week. Promises
have been given repeatedly that
something would be done, but it
was enough for a couple of articles
to appear in the National Demo-
cratic anti-Semitic Press and this
"strong" government immediately
lost its courage and retreated.
And because of the weakness of
this government, "with the strong
hand," we Jews continue to be
crushed and ground down.

ABOUT JEWS AND JEWISH PROBLEMS

It seems to be the modern failing.

But if this is so, why do the lerist Deputy in the Prussian Par-

fuss about converting Jews, and the Jews to go to Palestine and
why do Jews so stiff-neckedly re- build up a Jewish nation there,

of the Pere Marquette to in any

fact that for many years some of
our best friends and patrons of
our hotel at Charlevoix, The Inn

"I trust the foregoing explana-

Pere Marquette from any respon-

matter and that you will accept
this as our apology."
Copies of telegrams attached to
this letter indicate that Mr. Young
demanded either the removal of
the offending reference from the
advertisemnt or the discontin-
uing of the use of his name and
the name of the Pere Marquette
in connection with these adver-

The Normans, Danish, Scottish
and other invaders of Ireland have
ever been hated by the "real
Irish," says the Catholic Herald.
But their descendants are always
spoken of as Irish when it is a
question of claiming some famous
man. The "invaders" were a for-
eign abomination when they sided
with the enemy. They were "Irish"
when they rebelled! And so is
history made up.
"We Irish," it goes on, "are
like the Jews with their boastings
as the chosen people of God; but
the Jews that stand for a memory
are not the Jews that atoned the
Prophets, that set up the golden
calf, that bowed down in he House
of Baal, that were guilty of every
crime and foulness possible to
man, and were terribly punished
on so many occasions for their
unparalleled wickedness. The Jews
that stand for a memory are the
Jews that did righteously-Abra-
ham, Isaac and Jacob, Samuel, Da-
vid, Moses, Solomon, the Prophets,
the men who held fast to God, and
whose passion was a passion for
righteousness and for God."
The Catholic Herald editorial
about the Irish might almost have
been "about the Jews."

The kosher kitchen is a project
entirely independent of any or-

by Hyman Altman, sponsor of a
Jewish radio hour, who was also
the organizer of a kosher kitchen
on Westminster avenue two years
ago. Mr. Altman is vice-president
of the group sponsoring the pres-
ent undertaking.
Mrs. Hyman Altman has com-
plete charge of the kitchen and
devotes all her time to the work
in the capacity of a volunteer.
Mr. Altman stated on Wednes-
day that the kitchen does not en-
courage the patronage of diners
who wish to pay a liberal price
for a meal, because it is not the
intention of the group to take
business away from restaurants.
He stated, however, that donations
may be sent to the treasurer, Wil-
liam Sandler of the Reliable Linen
Supply Co., either at his office or
to the synagogue.
About 140 people were fed at
the kitchen on Tuesday, half of
them receiving their meals free.
Many children, who told pathetic
stories of hunger and want, were
fed during the week.
On Wednesday, 176 were served
meals, and of these 49 were chil-
dren and 29 were served free.

sioner of the kosher kitchen. Miss

and dental care. This daily check-
up makes it possible to prevent
children with incipient contagious
diseases from mingling with others.
The children have a rest period
after lunch from 1 to 2, during
which time they stretch out on
sheets and blankets provided for
that purpose. Lunch is served at
noon under the direction of a
trained dietician. From 3:45 to
4:00 the children are again served
this time milk and crackers.

Friday Is Outing Day.

Every Friday is outing day at
the Play School. Outnigs already
scheduled are: Three excursions to
Tashmoo, visits to Palmer Park,
Voight Park, Rouge Park and
Belle Isle, trips to private farms,
the Zoo, creameries, newspaper
plants, circuses, etc.' On all out-
ings the Play School furnishes
packed lunches for the children, as
they are out of doors all dayy.
The entire enrollment of the Play
School is divided into six groups
following as closely as possible the
public school groupings. The re-
spective groups have selected, in
accordance with modern pedagogy,
the following "play-work" projects
about which they are planning their
activities for the summer:

The youngest group, in "playing"
farm products, has visited farms,
studied about the various products
an dtheir uses, and is now busy
drawing from memory and imagi-
nation the many things they found
of individual interest.
The children who are busy with
circus animals are building a cir-
cus and moulding the animals to
fit, so that they may be properly
housed. Even a ferris wheel is
being built.
The Detroit Zoological Park has
already been visited several times
by the group interested in jungle
animals. Their work calls for the
moulding fo jungle animals and a
study of natural habits.
A fourth group is studying the
history of, in addition to building

because it is felt that, in theory,
competition is an artificial stimulus
and that the achievement level so

the classes along. This is possible
because the children choose to ex-
