Canadian Jewry Asks Gov-

MONTREAL—(J. T. A.)—The
request of h. Abugov, Jewish
merchant of Lachine, for an Inter-
locutory injunction restraining Jo-
seph Menard, owner of three anti-
Semitic publications, LeGoglu, Le .
Chameau and Le Miroir, or his
agents, servants and employees,
from writing, publishing, editing
or distributing any journals, and
any articles, in the said journals,
of a calumnious, malicious and li-
belous nature that are against the
Jews and the Jewish race in gen-
eral, was taken "en delibre" by
Justice Desaulviers, after an all-
day dramatic session in the Super-
ior Court. The judge declared
that he will pass judgment on
Sept. 1, but will keep the anti-
Semitic publications under surveil-
lance and will be dictated by their
further actions.
During the hearing the Jewish
advocates, Joseph Cohen, K. C.,
a M. L. A. and Myer Gameroff,
pointed out the irreparable dam-
age to the province and the Jewish
population that is being done by
the continued calumnies of the
anti-Semitic weeklies and declared
that the Jewish community only
desires that the attacks be stopped.
The court-room was crowded to
capacity at both morning and
afternoon sessions.
Judge's Condemnation.
At the previous hearing the
judge refused a petition of the
defense to have the case put over
for a later date and added that
the articles in the anti-Semitic
publications are of such a charac-
ter which may imperil the safety
of the public at large. The judge
characterized the articles con-
cerned as anti-Christian, anti-
social and anti-national.
The legal steps taken against
the publishers of the anti-Semitic
weeklies have aroused consider-
able interest and deep satisfaction
among the local Jewish population.
Many more actions are contem-
plated and will be discussed at the
first meeting of the newly-formed
"legal self-defense" committee,
organized at the conference of
various Jewish organizations held
here last week. The holding over
of the request for an injunction
is not considered a set-back al-
though it was expected that the
petition will be granted at once.
Ask Government Curb.
At a representative conference
of Jewish organizations held here
a committee was appointed to take
immediate legal action against the
anti-Semitic agitation and the rit-
ual murder accusations levelled
against Jews by the Goglu publi-
cations.
The committee, which was in-
structed to co-operate with the
Canadian committee, will also pro-
test to the government which will
be requested to take steps to curb
the anti-Semitic incitement.

list is almost as large as those who
have been enrolled. Fees up to
10 cents per day are either paid or
waived; there are no rules, regu-

balanced hot lunches are provided

additional cost when they are not

a score of such schools in New

from the White House of the
resignation of A, C. Ratshesky
of Boston from his diplomatic
post as Minister to Czechoslo-

Mr. Ratshesky, who called up-

In accepting the resignation,
the President declared he did

covers the panorama ■ of likes
and dislikes affecting the Jew.
The editor highly recommends
this brilliant article by the
London editor of the J. T. A.
M. P., declares that "Ireland al-
ways seems to achieve bad leader-
ship in a moment of difficulty, and
at this critical moment they have
put a Portuguese Jew in the posi-
tion of leader."
St. John Ervine goes on to ex-
plain that "a man may be a Jew
and a Spaniard, or an Englishman
or a German, or a Portuguese, or
an Irishman, or an Abyssinian,"
pointing out that ''there is a group
of Jews in Abyssinia who are as
black as your hat."
About D. Valera
That is all very well, and very
true, if you mean that the Jews
are citizens of their countries, and
belong to the Jewish faith. But
wiien St. John Ervine goes on to
add that "one of the best known
Irish players is an Irish Catholic
Jew", what exactly does he mean?
If a man no longer of the Jew-
ish faith is still a Jew, of the Jew-
ish race, how can he be a Jew
and a Spaniard or an Englishman,
etc?
De Valera was born in New
York. His father was a Spanish
Catholic, and his mother an Irish
Catholic, and he was educated at
the Christian Brothers' School at
Charleville, in the United States.
And now when the Eucharistic
Congress Is being held In Dublin,
his capital, de Valera, the Irish
Free State Premier, or President
as they prefer to call him there,
is ^onstantly at the side of the
Papal Legate, a Catholic of Catho-
lics.
Many Spanish Catholics have
Jewish blood in them; and it is
possible that Mr. St. John Ervine
is right when he claims that de
wealth, which the banks trade in,
exercise control over that wealth,
the roots will die because of lack
of nourishment."
Hated for Everything.
Poor people hate Jews because
some bankers are Jews; rich peo-
ple hate Jews because some Corn-
munists and Socialists are Jews.
And anything in the world that
is unpopular, somehow or other
manages to get a Jewish angle,
here is deValera, for instance,
becoming the new bogy man of
the British Empire, and immedi-
ately there is a chorus of "Jew"
from a number of people who
seem to be convinced that if you
scratch anyone you don't like or
who has done you harm, you're
sure to find something Jewish in
him,
St. John Ervine, who really
ought to know better, writes that
"no one who knows Mr. deValera
denies that he is a Jew, but if
anyone did, Mr. deValera's feat-
urea would speak for themselves."

Jews being removed from the

their admission fees. In response
to representations made in behalf
of the offended parties by Philip

"I can assure you it Is wholly
against my policy to permit such
discrimination, even if it were per.

which it of course is not."
Governor Brucker turned the
matter over for investigation to
George R. llogarth, director of
the Department of Conservation
of the State of Michigan. Mr.

and found that the beach Is un-

R. R. Agent Apologizes
An offensive advertisement, an-

continued in local newspapers
when Mr. Slomovitz interceded
with F. A. Young, general agent
of the passenger department of

over whose name the advertise-

a result of this intercession that
Mr. Young was unaware of the
type of copy submitted in his
name, and upon his demand to the
responsible party, the advertise-
ment was withdrawn.
In a letter explaining the error,
Mr. Young stated to Mr. Slomo-
vitz: „
"I was surprised to learn that
my name had been associated
with a newspaper advertisement,
in connection with All-Expense
Tours to Virginia, in which was
mentioned 'Gentile Clientele.'
"Investigation develops that the
advertisement was placed direct
with the Detroit News by the man-

use of my name and the Pere

authorized, will be discontinued
immediately, as indicated in the
