Going to Colombia.

Dr. Marvin Mayer Harris and
his wife, Dr. Minnie B. Harris,
sailed last week on the United Fruit
Liner Sixaola for Santa Marta,
Colombia, for an eight-weeks' stay
to be devoted to bacteriological re-
search. Both are bacteriologists at
Johns Hopkins University, under
whose auspices this expedition has
been arranged for the purpose of
collecting plant specimens. Other
members of the expedition are Dm
William Seifriz, Thomas Kerr, E.
Shumann and H. Behrmann of the
University of Pennsylvnaia.
Dr. Harris is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Harris of Detroit. Mr.
Harris for years has been a con-
stable in Wayne County. Both Dr.
Harris and Constable Harris were
born in Detroit. Constable and Mrs.
Harris are now at their summer
home at Flat Rock, Mich.
Describing the project prior to
his departure for Colombia, Dr.
Harris stated: "The region provides
a fine natural laboratory." He
stated that the range of climate
from the tropical to snow-capped
mountains, averaging from 18,000
to 20,000 feet in height, within a
distance of 30 miles, provides favor-
able conditions for his research,
and he declared that his party
would be able "to collect tropical,

Urges Stay of Execution

Unser Como

"The Congress relaxed the rigors
of the deportation provisions of the
Act by providing that it shall not
apply to one pardoned, nor if the
court et the time of sentence, or
within 30 days thereafter, recom-
mends against deportation. Rec-
ommendation of this character was
in the instant case made by the
sentencing judge, but it is of no
avail to the petitioner because not
made within the time fixed by the
Act, as indeed it seldom is in a busy
criminal court, whether state or
federal.
"The petitioner is a native and
citizen of England who entered the
United States legally on Aug. 1,
1923, and has resided here contin-
uously with his family, consisting
of his father, mother, two brothers
and two sisters. It is true that he
has violated the law, but it is also
true that he has paid the penalty
imposed by law. While the record
is silent on the subject, it may be
safely inferred that the sentencing
judge had not before him such facts
as would warrant the conclusion
that in addition to the statutory
penalty the petitioner would be
subject to the far more onerous
burden of deportation. It seems
to me, therefore, not inappropriate
to recommend that before the war.

Dr. Combos discussed the arts-
craft book which is now being pre-
pared for the use of Jewish Youth
Clubs throughout the country. He
said that it would describe tech-
niques for carving a ban relief,
constructing decorative objects out
of wood, work in sheet metal, appli-
que work, clay modeling and pot-
tery, basketry, leather work and
poster and lettering. A great por-
tion of this volume will be devoted
to the making of Jewish ceremonial
objects. Other objects of general
utility such as table lamps, book
racks, jewelry, etc., will all be de-
signed with motifs which are remin-
iscent of some aspects of Jewish
