Rumania has earned the condemnation of
the entire civilized world for tolerating the
Inquisition in Bessarabia. Unser Zeit of
Kishinev, referring to similar tortures of
Jews in numerous cities in Bessarabia, de-
clares that "only sadists and degenerates,
the riff-raft of society, could have thought
of such barbaric cruelties." What about
a government which not only permits such
tortures, but also attempts to prevent the
spread of news, now authenticated, which
brands it in the eyes of the world as cruel
and inhuman!
The Bronstein occurrence proves the
value to the Jews throughout the world of
the service of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency which keeps our people everywhere
informed on happenings in every portion
of the globe. The revelation of this hor-
rible event is another great contribution
for which the Jewish Telegraphic Agency
deserves the commendations of all Jewry.
Certainly as a result of the publication of
these facts, Rumania should be forced to
put an end to the Inquisition that has been
instituted against Jews.

Italian Jewry with its fine re-
ligious and cultural Jewish tra-
ditions going back for centuries
and its long list of great and
famous men whom it produced,
is in the throes of a crisis. Dur-
ing the last 60 years it has un-
dergone a rapid process of al-
most complete assimilation.
Those who have followed the
life of Italian Jewry since the
Risargimento, during the exist-
ence of the independent Italian
kingdom, must have observed
with anxiety how Italian Jews
are assimilating and disappear-
ing, becoming absorbed in the
general population of the coun-
try.
So that the new Jewish com-
munities law and the netting up
of a federation of Jewish com-
munities in Italy is attracting
the attention of all who have
interest in the future of Italain
Jewry, and who hope that these
new institutions will pump new
energy into the religious and
cultural life of the Jews of
Italy and act as a reviving
force.
One of the effects of the new
law is to bring into existence a
number of new Jewish com-
munities in Italy.
But at the same time, other
Jewish communities which
exist in places where the num-
ber of Jews has dwindled, and
the pulse of Jewish life is as a
result, beating but feebly, are
ceasing to exist as independent
organisms, and are being swal-
lowed up by adjoining larger
communities.
JEWISH RAVENNA
Some of these Jewish com-
munities that are now going out
of existence have been in exist-
ence for a thousand years, they
have written glorious pages in
the history of Italian Jewry,
have done great things in the
field of Jewish learning, have
produced famous scholars and
men of action, have taken an
active part in the general life
of the country.
There is, for instance, Raven;
na. Jewish Ravenna, which is
now being swallowed up by the
Jewish community of Padda, has
a wonderful history. There are
historical records relating to
Jewish settlements in Ravenna
going back to the sixth century.
In 1391 the brothers Emanuelle
and Alvisio Muzzetto settled in
Ravenna and opened a banking
business there. They settled in

over their relatives and friends,
who developed the little town
of Ravenna into an important
trading center. Venice tried to
hamper the activities of the
Jews of Ravenna, but it had no
effect on them, and in spite of
the severe competition they
made themselves famous in the
expansion of the woolen trade.

tance attached to the Jews in
Ravenna, it is enough to recall
that when Napoleon conquered
the city the municipal adminis-

Ravenna produced not only
important and wealthy Jewish
traders and bankers (one should
mention among the traders the
great family of Consigli) but
also famous scholar, and
writers like Chaim Samuel Die-
