JI Column for Our Boys and Girls
By UNCLE JUDAH
DEAR BOYS AND GIRLS:
For today's column I have selected for your enjoyment a number
of brief items. An interesting poem, a few short stories and fables
and several wise sayings are included in my selection for the week.
Now that school is over, and that many of you will have a great
deal of leisure, why not write something for your column? I hope
those of you who have the ability to write poems or short stories will
do so and send them to me. And I hope to find some real good ones
among those you write so that all our readers may enjoy them.
YOUR UNCLE JUDAH.

WHEN ALEXANDER THE
GREAT MET A PEOPLE WHO
KNEW NOT WAR
Alexander the Great, the world
conqueror, once came across a sim-
ple people in Africa who knew not
war, and decided to remain there
for a while.
One day two natives came to him
with this argument: One of these
men said that he had bought a piece
of land and afterwards discovered
a treasure buried in that land. He
claimed that the treasure belonged
to the man who sold him the land,
and he therefore wished to return
it. The seller, however, refused to
accpt it.
Thereupon, Alexander turned to
the buyer and said, "Host thou a
son?" "Yes!' was the reply. Then
addressinug the seller he inquired,
"Host thou a daughter?" "Yes!"
was the reply. "Then let them both
get married," said Alexander, "and
let the treasure become their wed-
ding gift." The two men were satis-
fied with this judgment.
But before they left Alexander
the Great remarked, " In my coun-
try if such a case had come before
the king, the two men in the case
would have been imprisoned, and
their treasure confiscated."
Then one of the natives spoke
up and said, "Is your country bles-
sed by sun and rain?" "Yes!" re-
plied Alexander. "Does it contain
cattle?" "Yes!"
"Then," ventured the native, "it
must be for the sake of these inno-
cent animals that the sun shines
upon that country; surely its peo-
ple are unworthy of such blessing."
RABBI HILLEL, RABBI SHAM.
MAI AND A HEATHEN.
An idol-worshiper once came to
Rabbi Shammai and said, "I wish
to become a Jew, on condition that
thou teach me the whole Torah
while I stand on one leg." Rabbi
Shammai, who was an ill-tempered
man, pushed the applicant away
with the staff which he held in his
hand. The heathen went to Rabbi
Hillel, and made the same applica-
tino. Rabbi Hillel, who was very
patient and humble, replied saying:
"Whatever hateful is to you,
Unto your neighbor never do!
"This is'the essence of the Torah.
Everything else is but a commen-
tary upon it. Now go and learn."
The heathen thanked him and be-
came • good and pious man. ,
WHAT THE TALMUD SAYS
ABOUT WEALTH
Wealth may be like waters
gathered in a house, which, finding
no untlet, drown the owner.
The fortune of this world is like
a wheel with two buckets, the full
becomes empty and the empty full.
TRANSLATIONS FROM THE
IIEBREW
1.
One day I observed a gray hair in
my head;
I plucked it right out, when It thus
to me said:
"Thou mayest smile, if thou wilt, at
thy treatment of me,
But soscore of my friends soon will
make mock of thee."
—Judah If a.Levi.
2.
Go not too frequently thy friends
to see,
Lest they grow weary of the sight
of thee;
When rain is scanty, then we pray
for more,
But love not one continuous down-
pour.
—Abraham ibn Chasdal.

UYERS everywhere are comparing
low-priced cars. Lifting hoods.
Counting cylinders. And the
result? An overwhelming verdict for
the six, in preference to cars of fewer
or more cylinders.
"SIX
CYLINDERS
NO MORE-
NO LESS,"
"SIX CYLINDERS. No more—No
less!" And America backs up that con-
viction by purchasing more six-cylinder
Chevrolets since January 1st, than
the combined total of all fours and
eights under $1000.
With ...note than six cylinders, you sacri-
fice Chevrolet's famous economy of
gas, oil and upkeep—the greatest
economy in today's motor car market.
With less than six cylinders, you sacri-
fice the built-in smoothness that
makes driving really enjoyable.
But with a six—a Chevrolet Six—
nothing is sacrificed. You get smooth.
ness AND economy.
And power-60 horsepower. And
apeed-65 to 70 miles an hour, easily!
And pick-up—from a standstill to
35 miles an hour in less than 7 seconds!
You also get Free Wheeling; Syncro-
Mesh gear-shifting; big, spacious Fisher
bodies.
So, when buying a new low-priced car,
settle the question of cylinders RIGHT,
and you can't go WRONG. Take
America's word for it: "SIX CYLIN-
