MAX CHOMSKY WINS
ORATORY CONTEST

Declared Winner in Milford
Stern Memorial Contest.

Max Chomsky, City College stu-
dent and member of the Philo-
mathic Debating Society, was de-
clared the victor of the fifth an-
nual senior oratorical contest,
which was named the Milford Stern
Memorial Oratorical Contest, in
memory of Milford Stern, the
originator of the contest and donor
of the cup. The contest was held
at the Center, 31 Melbourne ave-
nue.
Adolph Goldberg was awarded
second place honors. Other ora-
tions were presented by Joe Aron-
son, George Kratchman and Max
Weil.
The five contestants were the
survivors of two eliminations in
which over 30 Center members
participated. All participants are
students at City College.
Max Chomsky's oration, en-
titled "The New Tomorrow," pre-
sented the problem of the attempts
of the Jew to adjust himself in the
Gentile world. lie declared that
the Jew in America must adjust
himself to a new life.
The winner of the contest is to
receive a gold medal and a cup
presented by a member of the fam-
ily of the late Milford Stern. The
second place orator will receive a
silver medal.
The contest was judged by Re-
gene Freund Cohsne, public speak-
ing enthusiast and attorney; Hugh
S. Maloney, intercollegiate ora-
torical champion for the past year,
and Milton Ross, dramatic and
public speaking instructor. Mor-
ris Garvetl, long associated with
Milford Stern, presided.
The contest was arranged by
the senior council's intellectual ad-
vancement committee, headed by
David Goldberg.
Intermediate Content.
Julian Kaplan of the Stage Club
was awarded first place honors in
the intermediate oratorical con-
test sponsored by the intermedi-
ate council of the Jewish Center.
His club mate, Louis Elkind, was
adjudged the second best speaker
of the evening. Others who took
part in the finals were Alfred
Brooks of the Orioles and Harold
Weiss of the Judeans. Hannah
Ferman judged the contest. Philip
Danzig presided.
Harry Green of the Pilot Club
won the junior-senior oratorical
contest, which was judged by Na-
than R Berke, Hannah Ferman
and George Kratchman.

AUXILIARY JUNE 5

The I.adies' Auxiliary of the
Jewish National Fund will hold its
last meeting of the season Wed-
nesday evening, June 9, at 8:30
o'clock, at Congregation Emanuel,
Taylor and Woodrow Wilson ave-
nues.
Aaron Rosenberg, prominent at-
torney, will address the meeting.
Irving Kohler will recite and Irv-
ing Panush will render several
violin selections.
Refreshments will be served.
At the last board meeting, held
at the home of Mrs. S. Jacobson
on Hazelwood avenue, many com-
mittees volunteered to assist in the
Flower Day which will take place
June 5.
A lawn card party was also
planned by the auxiliary, to take
place Sunday, June 26, on the

Important Land Redemp-
tion Fund.

The annual Flower Day of the
Jewish National Fund will be ob-
served this Sunday, June 6, by
communities throughout the coun-
try, and hundreds of volunteers
have been enrolled for the work in
Detroit.
The canvass will commence Sat-
urday night and will continue all
day Sunday. The work is under
the general direction of Leon Kay,
president of the Detroit Council of
the fund, and he has the support
of many organizations.
Headquarters for the canvass
will be at the National Fund club-
rooms, 8723 Twelfth street, tele-

Dexter headquarters will be at
Tuxedo-Holmur Talmud Torah,

ous chairmen, this affair promises
to be a unique event. Music will
be furnished by Dick Wolfe's
Wolverines Orchestra.

It will agan be held at the B'nai
I Moshe Synagogue on Monday eve-
' ning, June 6, beginning at 9 p.
m. The music will again be by
the 10 popular syncopators under
leadership of Leonard Rozner. An
invitation is extended to all, young
and old, to come Monday evening.
Admission 15 cents.

Cramer - Henselt Recital.

Saturday evening. at 8:30 sharp,
at the Gunzburg School of Music,
a recital will be given dedicated to
the performance of 60 etudes by
J. B. Cramer, with the second
piano accompaniment by Adolph
Ilenselt. Etudes by Cramer were
the favorites with Adolph Henselt
For the purpose of stimulating in.
terest in his students he used to
improvise a second piano part.
Franz Liszt auggested Henself to
write these improvisations down
and after Henselt died, the Ger-
man publisher Schlesinger made
an excellent edition of these
etudes.
The following artist students of
Dr. Mark Gunzberg will partici-

te at this performance: Miss
orate* Kitson, Miss Loretta Pe-
trosky, Mlle Zelda Sky. Samuel
Soria. The first 10 etudes will be
played by Mr. Gnitaburr himself.
The public is lavited.
