ISAFEGUARDING JEWISH HEALTH IN
EASTERN AND CENTRAL EUROPE
Joint Distribution Committee through its efforts has built
and equipped 496 health institutions in Poland alone
One of the most important acconiplishinents of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee
in its program of social and economic reconstruction work among the Jews of Eastern and Central Europe
in the past seventeen years, is its work in the health field. During that period it has aided in establishing
four hundred and ninety-six different institutions in Poland alone, including hospitals, medical centers,
clinics. convalescent homes, nurses' training schools. sanitary organizations and babies' feeding stations.
This heolth building activity is carried on in Poland by the TOZ, the Society for Safeguarding the
Health of the Jews in Poland, which is subventimed by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Commit-
tee. The society now hos sixty-three branches throughout the country with a paying membership of fifteen
thousand. In 1020 th e Joint Distribution Committee participated in this work by donating 56%, of the
necessary expenses. In 1930 its participation was reduced to 19'.%, the balance being subscribed by local
communities. Similar health work is carried on by the OZE, the Union in Preserving the Health of Jett
in Lithuania. Latvia, Bessarabia, Bokovina and in pails of the Ukraine.
The disastrous economic conditions throughout Poland today, threaten this constructive piece
important welfare activity. Polish Jews are looking t o America for continued aid during the present crvisii

A nation-wide comnaign is now being undertaken under the leadership of Rabbi Jonah B. Wise to

Collegiate' Emphatically
Against Intermarriage
SEATTLE. - (J. T. A.) -
Students of lift Jewish, Cath-
olic and Protestant faiths took
a unanimous stand against in-
termarriage oral branded it as
highly undesirable in the course
of the first collegiate good will
conference recently concluded
here.
Dean Richard D. Tyler, heed
of the University of Washing-
ton Engineering College, head-
ed the gathering and declared
that the SUCCESS of the first ef-
fort ensures its early repetition.
The next similar gathering will
probably be held in the fall.
"There are in our religions ■
great many more similarities
than there are differences," was
the keynote of the conference
as expressed by Dean Tyler.
"Fundamentally we are work-
ing for the same thing," he said.
Samuel Koch, a local rabbi,
however, told the group that if
Jew and Gentile intermarry, the
Jew should adopt. the Christian
faith if his mate will not em-
brace Judaism. He is rabbi of
Temple de Hirsch in Seattle.
