The sum total of the work of
the United Synagogue has been
that not only individual syna-
gogues, but the synagogue gener-
ally has assumed a different com-
plexion and taken on new life; it
has been stimulated in the direc-
tion of greater usefulness, better
decorum, finer forms of worship,
aided by a standardized festival
prayer book and guides for chil-
dren's and young people's services.
A clearer understanding has been
fostered of our duty to the syna-
gogue not only as a place of wor-
ship but as a center of Jewish sc.
Wray. A keener sense of Jewish
responsibility has been developed,
a recognition of the Val Yisroel
idea.

The wisdom of the founder of
the United Synagogue of Amer-
ica has been vindicated. The need
of union has been accentuated by
recent events.
The post-war conditions consti-
tute a challenge as well as afford
an opportunity for our national
bodies to endeavor to serve Juda-
ism in a real and lasting way, to
lay the foundation for permanence
and stability in Jewish life, to be
of positive help to future genera-
tions.
What we need is not a
number of separate, weak, inef-
fective congregational units, but a
strong, unified group to cope with
the many problems confronting u•
in this land. It behooves Jewry in
America to preserve and expand
the United Synagoge of America.
