MOVIE STARS AID
L. A. SANATORIUM
By EDITH
R. PARANSKY
More and more people through-
out the country are realizing what
a necessity it is to help with the
upkeep of the national sanatorium
located at Duarte near Los An-
geles.
Phil Goldstone, an outstanding
figure in the motion picture world
and dubbed "king" of the indepen-
dent producers, has also won the
title of "guardian angel of the
sanatorium," his warm interest
and philanthropic sentiments hav-
ing been transmuted into thou-
sands of dollars which have meant
aid and comfort to those depen-
dent upon the efforts of Duarte
Sanatorium for a return to health
and general rehabilitation into
civic and social life.
The fine building which houses
the medical staff of the sanator-
ium was the gift of Mr. Goldstone
and was erected in the name of
his mother and in honor of his sis-
ter, Bessie Goldstone. Mr. Gold-
stone is adding to his philanthropy
at the present time by the erection
of a laundry building on the
grounds of the sanatorium.
Through the efforts of Mr. Gold-
stone, Universal Studios of Uni-
versal City assisted towards rais-
ing funds for the institution by
attending a studio party where the
most prominent of movie stars
participated. Eddie Cantor was
master of ceremonies. Among
those who aided in the informal
entertainment were George Arliss,
Paul Lukas, Wallace Beery, Joan
Crawford, Marion Nixon, James
Cams( and Douglas Fairbanks,
Jr.
"Night With Forty-niners" is the
odd name given to this party,
which was sponsored and arranged
by the Helping Hand, an auxiliary
of outstanding Jewish society ma-
trons of Los Angeles.
Of the number of patients now
at the sanatorium, Detroit Jewry
has been fortunate enough to
have had 42 patients of this city
admitted within the past five
years. This was accomplished by
dint of hard work on the part of
members of the Detroit Auxiliary
of the Los Angeles Sanatorium.
The Detroit Auxiliary has erected
a Detroit unit at the Duarte sana-
torium and all funds raised by
this auxiliary go towards the
maintenance of those stricken
ones.
The Detroit Auxiliary is com-
posed of delegates from some 60
organizations and Landsman-
schaf ten.
The Detroit Auxiliary raises its
funds by giving dances, card par-
ties, theater parties, bazaars, pic-
nics, banquets and other similar
activities. Since the auxiliary car-
ries no administration expenses,
the public is at all times assured
that 100 per cent profits are sent
direct to the national instituution
At present the Detroit Auxiliary
is mapping out plans to sponsor a
tag week beginning with May 28.
A splendid committee has been
appointed and arrangements will
be announced in a later issue.
