WHERE EAST MEETS WEST: HOW JEWS LIVE
IN JUGOSLAVIA
(Continued from Preceding Page.)
tie has been cut off from Vien-
na and Belgrade is the new
capital, there is a struggle going
on between these two cities, Za-
greb and Belgrade, each seek-
ing to exercise the leadership
over Jugoslavian Jewry. Za-
greb looks down on Belgrade
as a parvenu, while Belgrade,
on the other hand, is proudly
aware of its dignity as the capi-
tal. So the two cities have be-
come rivals.
WHERE TRADITION LIVES
The Jewish communities in
Slavonia are in a somewhat dif-
ferent position. These are the
towns which before the war be-
longed to Ilungary. Although
their Jews are outwardly indis-
tinguishable from the average
Croatian or Slovene citizen,
they are, when you get to know
them better, very much differ-
ent from them and from the
Croatian Jews. To begin with.
most of them speak Hungarian
and German among themselves
In Jewish affairs they are organ-
ized on the old lines of tht
semi-Orthodox "status quo"
Jewish communities. The "status
quo" Jewish communities are
those Jewish communities in
Hungary, and those districts
which used to belong to Hun-
gary, who would not join either
o the two great Jewish bodies,
the Orthodox and the Neolog
(Reform), and remained in
status quo.
Here you will still find the
traditional Jewish charity organ-
izations. Jews are busy with
Jewish communal politics. The
synagogues are well attended,
the town rabbi looks after the
Jewish education of the chil-
dren, and he is generally both a
man with a university education
and a doctorate, and an Ortho-
dox Jew. It is strange to see
these rabbis wearing the same
clerical uniform as the Protest-
ant clergymen, but they are men
deserving of all respect, for
they do in these out-of-the-way
places keep alive the spirit of
Judaism. "Can you realize

up," one of these rabbis once
complained to me, "in order to
persuade a Jewish assimilation-
ist to send his boy or his girl to
attend the Jewish religious
classes?"
The Zionist ideal has taken
root in this part of the world,
especially among the youth. In
the town of Novisad, I saw
scores of Jews in the reading
room conducted by the local
Zionist organization deep in the
German-Jewish and even in the
Yiddish newspapers. I lay stress
on the word "Yiddish," because
there are not many Yiddish-
speaking Jews in Jugoslavia..
IMPORTANT NAMES
Economically, the people are
not worse off here than in the
big cities, but they are begin-
ning to feel the effect of the
crisis. When I was there in
1929 I asked how things were,
and I was told that if things
werezo worse with the Jews of
Austria and Poland, they would
not need to complain. But now,
when I came there again and put
the same question, I received a
different answer. The crisis has
already penetrated into Jugo-
slavia, and the Slovene Jews,
who are most of them engaged
in commerce, are beginning to
sing a different tune. Slavonia
is an agrarian country, and if
the peasant on the banks of the
River Sovo can't sell his corn,
or his pigs, the Jew in the town
feels the draught. But if you
think of the way the Jews of
Eastern Europe are living, then
the position of the Jews of
Jugoslavia is an enviable one.
The Jews here have been in busi-
ness with the local population
for many generations. Some of
the firms are very old-fashioned.
Business is not bad. The govern-
ment's attitude to the Jews is no
different than it is to the non-
Jews and the crisis is after all
a world crisis, which has been
much less felt in Jugoslavia than
elsewhere, and it will probably
go in Jugoslavia sooner than
anywhere else..
Ten minutes before entering
Belgrade the train stops at a
little town of villas, known as
Zemlin. This is a historic town
situated on the banks of the
River Danube and Sovo, and it
has also some historic signifi-
cance to Jews, for the parents
of Dr. Theodor Herzl once lived
in this town, which 'till the war
belonged to Austria, and about
80 years ago one of the great
Jews of Jugoslavia, Rabbi
Hodes Alkalay, an uncle of
Senator Dr. Alkalay, who is now
chief rabbi of Jugoslavia, lived
there. At present Zemlin has ■
large mixed Jewish community.
Many of the wealthier Belgrade
Jews live in Zemlin, carrying on
their businesses in Belgrade, but
having their homes on the other
side of the Sovo.
In Vienna they say that the
Orient begins on the Czechoslo-
vakian side of the Danube. The
Czechoslovakians decline the
honor, and assert that it begins
in the Central Station at Bel-
grade. A mob of porters hurl
themselves at you, shouting and
tearing the luggage oat of your

TWO COMMUNITIES
Then are two Jewish com-
munities in Belgrade, one Se-
phardic, the other Ashkenazic.
The Sephardic community is the
oldest, and the most important.
It consists of the native-born
Jews, while the Ashkenazim are
recent arrivals, still in the pro-
cess of adjustment. The great
majority of the Ashkenazic Jews
in Belgrade have come there
within the last 10 years or so.
The chief rabbi of the Ashke-
nazic community, Rabbi Dr.
Shlank, claims to have docu-
ments showing that the Ashke-
nazim were the first Jews in Bel-
grade centuries ago, and that at
that time there were large and
well organized Aahkenazic Jew-
ish communities in this part of
the country, but that is a matter
that must be left to scholars
and research workers. At the
present time there are about
13,000 Jews in the Jugoslavian
capital. Economically and po-
litically their position is exactly
the same as that of the rest of
the Serbian population. Walk-
ing through the streets, you can-
not help noticing the numerous
signs over the shop fronts bear-
ing characteristics Sephardic
Jewish names
Both the Jewish communities,
the large Sephardic community
and the small Ashkenazic cum-
munity, are in a flourishing
condition. About two years
ago, the comparatively young
Ashkenazic community erected
a very line and imposing com-
munity building, and a beautiful
synagogue, and about the same
time the Sephardic community
built a new community house,
which cost several million dinar.
The relations between the two
communities are most friendly.
There is also a Jewish students'
kosher kitchen in Belgrade,
which also caters for the Jewish
soldiers. But assimilation has
struck deep roots in Belgrade.
The percentage of mixed mar-
riages not only in Belgrade, but
throughout Jugoslavia is alarm-
ing. And it is on the increase,
rather than diminishing. There
is no specifically Jewish press in
Jugoslavia, with the exception
of a few small periodicals ap-
pearing in Serbian, but the
general press is most sympa-
thetic on all matters concerning
the Jews.
It was a Christian journalist.
for instance, who told me sonic
extremely interesting things
about the Jews who used to live
in Serbia in olden days. The
founder of the Serbian dynasty,
/Caro Geroge, had a considerable
number of Jewa among his min-
isters and counsellors, and
there hardly seems to have been
a time when the relation be-
tween Serbs and Jews was
other than friendly. Serbia is
perhaps the only one of the
Slavic countries which has not
become infected with anti-Semi-
tism.
The royal family, and
especially King Alexander, are
noted froends of the Jews and
of Jewish aspirations.
I went into the Sarajevo syna-
gogue for the evening service.
It wee almost over when I came
in. The cantor was chanting in
nasal Oriental fashion as you
will hear the Jewish prayers
chanted in all the Oriental
places of the Jewish world, in
Sarajevo, in Stamboul. or in
Cairo.
