and THE LEGAL CHRONICLE

NUMEROUS JEWISH
TOLEDO ACTIVITIES

By YEDIDIAH BASSIS

The greater part of the Jewish
communal activities of Toledo is
concentrated in the annex building
of Congregation B'nai. Israel. To-
ledo not having any separate Jew-
ish center this annex fulfils the
function of a Jewish, center. For
the erection of this annex building,
Toledo is obliged in a great degree
to the rabbi of Congregation B'nai
Israel, Rabbi M. Lichtenstein, who
has been serving in that capacity
for the last 12 years, carrying
on his shoulders the burden of the
work for every Jewish activity in
the city.
Rabbi Lichtenstein is also the
principal of the Toledo Ilebrew
School. This school was organized
by the veterans of Jewish religious
education, Henry Rosen and David
Itayman, half a century ago, but
never for the whole period of its
existence has this Talmud Torah
reached such a high standard as
under the leadership of Rabbi Lich-
tenstein. lie transferred the school
from the basement of one of the
local synagogues into the beautiful
classrooms of the annex building
and engaged as its director the
educator and Jewish scholar, J. M.
Michlin. The latter has been di-
recting the school for the last seven
years and with the co-operation of
the other teachers, Messrs. J. M.
Raymon, Bennovitz and Sam Schul-
ler, succeeded in advancing the
Jewish religious education of To-
ledo. Among the graduates of this
school are some who confined their
Jewish studies in Rabbi Isaac El-
chonon's Yeshiva of New York, and
one of them is on the teacher's
staff of the Talmud Torah.
Rabbi Lichtenstein is also con-
ducting a successful Sunday school.
Mr. Michlin has built a popular
junior congregation which holds its
services every Saturday and holi,
day mornings.
Recently a Young Judaea Club
was organized whose members are
graduates of this Talmud Torah.
A Jewish Cultural Society, "Nair
Tarnid' whose membership is re-
cruited from among the Jewish
young professionals of Toledo, was
organized by Dr. Croustine.
Since last fall the Toledo Hebrew
School has made close connections
with the United Hebrew Schools
of Detroit, and its superintendent,
B. Isaacs. When one of the oldest
teachers of the Toledo School, Mr.
Benovitz, had to resign from his
position on account of illness, Mr.

There are no "runs" on life insurance
companies.
,
There have been no life insurance

company failures.
Truly, the life insurance business
is the outstanding safe depression-
proof industry!
The reason for the stability and in-
tegrity of life insurance can be
traced to its corporate structure,

panic, depression, and epidemic in
history—and to the high ethics of its
man-power.
Morris Fishman, Vice-President of
the Detroit Life Insurance Company,
has for the past 20 years served the
Detroit public and is a true product
of the institution of life insurance.
He has been eminently successful in
his work and the Detroit Life Insur-
ance Company is pleased to set aside
March as "Fishman Month" in his
honor.
Morris Fishman faces his friends
and clients today not only as a pub-
lic spirited citizen but also as an
advisor and life insurance counsellor
of wide experience, selling a com-
modity that is guaranteed to be safe
—and always worth its contract
price.
