ganizations, Mr. Miller devoted
moot of his time to two major
Jewish international movements,
13 nal B'rith and the cause of
Zionism. A pioneer in Zionism, he
was instrumental in organizing a
Zionist organization in Bay City,
where he lived for a short time.
Later he was prominent in Zionist
activities in Pittsburgh. Upon his
return to Detroit in 1913 he be-
came active in the movement here.
Ile was elected chairman of the
board of directors in 1919, and in
1920 was elected president of the
District. Ile also served as a mem-
ber of the national executive com-
mittee of the Zionist Organization
of America in 1920, 1921 and
1922.

In 1921 Mr. Miller became the
director of the Keren Hayesod,
which was then organized as the
major fund for Palestine. Through
hie efforts Detroit sent to Pales-
tine $55,000 in 1922, $68,000 in
1923, $86,000 in 1924 and $60,000
In 1925.

In 1917 Mr. Miller attended the

first pm-conference of the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress in Chicago,
and the same year attended the
national conference in Philadel-
phia. Ile also attended numer-
ous conventions and Zionist con.
ferences in the past 15 years.

MIDNIGHT FROLIC, FEB. 27

When the first group of boys
left for Camp Custer in 1917,
when war was declared, Mr. Miller,
representing District Grand Lodge
No. 6 of B'nai B'rith, traveled
through Michigan at his own ex-
pense and established the Soldiers
and Sajlors Welfare League. The
first meeting took place in Battle
Creek, at the Post Tavern Hotel,
Sept. 11, 1917, with representa-
tives from all Michigan lodges
present. One of Mr. Miller's sons

Mr. Miller was highly commended
by Grand Lodge officers and by
the late Phillip Stein, pest presi-
dent of the lodge.

His activities in B'nai B'rith be-
gan in 1902, when he was elected
president of Bay City Lodge No.
78 and was considered the young-
est president to be elected of a
B'nai B'rith lodge. Ile was elect-
ed president of Pisgah Lodge No.
34 of Detroit in 1915 and again
in 1919. In years of service in
Pisgah lodge, he is next to the
oldest living past president. While
attending the first Grand Lodge
convention in Chicago in 1904, he
was honored by being elected a
member of the Court of Appeals.

cardozo's name has been brought

forward for appointment to the
Supreme Court. in 1930 he was
urged for the vacancy caused by
the death of Associate Justice San-
ford.

Judge Cardozo will be the sec-
ond bachelor member of the
court. The other is Justice Mc-
Reynolds.

Cardozo's Career.

From his admission to the New
York bar in 1891 to his selection
to be associate justice of the Su-
preme Court at the age of 61,
Benjamin Nathan Cardozo has
steadily accumulated, without
seeking it, the admiration of law-
yers and laymen, conservatives
and liberals, Republicans and
Democrats, who have come to
speak of hint as one of the great
legal scholars of his time.
For clarity of thought and lu-
cidity of expression, his name
long ago became associated in
public references with the name
of the retiring justice, Oliver
Wendell Holmes, whose place in
the Supreme Court he is to fill.
Both are recognized as "liberals"
who hold that the law must take
the form and pressure of the time,
that it must compromise between
the claims of the past and the
needs of the present, between set-
tled traditions and the evolution
of public purpose.
Won His M. A. at 20.
Ile was born in New York City
May 24, 1870, and was early im-
pressed with the confusion of in-
terests which the city presents.
He undertook to think his way
through. At Columbia College he
graduated with highest honors at
the age of 19. Next year, in 1890,
he received the degree of Master
of Arts from the university. The
following year lie was admitted to
the bar.
For 22 years his private prac-
tice was active and varied. lie
left the bar for the bench when in
the Fusion movement in 1913 the
judiciary committee of the Bar
Association recommended him as
one "who hag furnished unmis-
takable evidence of fitness and
qualification for the highest order
of judicial service."
He was supported in a circular
signed by Joseph H. Choate, Ilenry
W. Taft, Louis Marshall, Harlan!
F. Stone and enry L. Stimson,l
present secretary of state.
Within a few months after Mr.
.
Cardozo was elected an Fusio
n
candidate to the New York Su-1
preme Court, he was named judge
of the Court of Appeals by Gov-1
Democrat . If e was
appointed to the permanent court ,
by Governor Whitman, a Repub. !
Linn, in January, 1917, and elect-
& f years as
associate judge in the same year.
Before Judge Cardozo's term
expired, the retirement of Chief
Judge Hiscock on reaching the age
of 70, in 1926, furnished another
occasion for evaluating Judge Car-

Le Goglu, one of the trio of anti-
Semitic publications, again devotes
virtually its entire issue to the visit
of the noted Zonist leader. Dr.
Sokolow's sole mission in Montreal,
state this publication, was to "in-
cite the Jews against the Canad-

author of the Bercovitch Bill to
curb the anti-Semitic agitation was
not Bercovitch, but the "Prince of
