Mrs. Irma L. Lindheim, for-
mer president of National Ha-
dassah, during her visit in De-
troit expressed the hope of set-
tling in Palestine next year.
Mrs. Lindheim said that she
hoped to organize a group of
Zionists into a co-operative col-
ony, creating a cultural center
for American Jews whose ideal
is the upbuilding of Palestine as
a Jewish homeland.
"Is your aim a Greenwich
Village of American Jewish in-
tellectuals in Palestine?" she
was asked by a representative
of The Detroit Jewish Chron-
icle.
"This is an excellent term,"
she assented, and expressed the
hope that a group with means
will join this.project and at the
/Mille time realize their goal for
Palestine.

The twelfth program in the cur-
rent series of Thursday night sub-
scription concerts by the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra was again
directed by Victor Kolar, who, in
the finest form, led his men in a
prize-winning presentation of Jan
Sibelius first symphony-that in
E-minor, Op. 39, for the opening
selection. This grandiose recital
of the awe-inspiring natural phe-
nomena of Finland, with an occa-
sional breath of refreshing calm
and sunlit serenity, all expressed
in music of noblest and most
touching simplicity, remains one
of Sibelius' most enduring com-
positions. It was superbly read
and quite brilliantly played, earn-
ing an ovation for leader and or-
chestra. Then, in place of the
celebrated "La Valse" of Ravel.
we were privileged to witness the
debut of the youngest of the three
successfulpiano audition winners
of this season's local concerts. A
nine-year-old miss, pretty, golden-
haired, and entirely naive Mae
Jurasek, came to the platform,
won her audience through her
most modest behavior, and by her
very remarkable performance of
the first movement of Mozart's B.
flat Major Concerti), earned such
an ovation as has seldom been wit-
nessed in this here vicinity. Here
is real pianistic talent and artistic
understanding that should help the
young lady to climb high on the
difficult ladder of genius and suc-
cess. It is a long and difficult
road, but one that has many com-
pensations for those that reach
the golden goal. May the fates be
kind to this gifted child!
The concert continued with a
presentation of Tausman's "Sone-
tine Transatlantique," a Pole's ex-
periment with the idiom and
rhythm of a Cab Callaway! Only
that and nothing more. Neither
original nor clever in its imita-
tions, it seems a waste of time to
work it up for performance at
subscription concert. (Gershwin's
new rhapsody is available-Boston
has just heard it-when do we?)
And then, finally, we were treated
to another variety of "blues"-
Italian blues, to be exact, in Ca-
gene's rhapsody, "Italia." It's a
fine bit of orchestrating of some
"native" "folk-chimes" that the
girls used to sing at high school
musicales-cheerful enough, but
hardly worth all the putter of an
orchestral accompanirnent. It was
played quite brilliantly, but some-
how failed to click. Perhaps the
audience was waiting for an invi-
tation to join in some of the chor-
uses. There's an idea!
D alies Franty, another prize-
winning pianist of the present
season, will come from Ann Ar-
bor on Saturday (Feb. 20) to play
Liszt'/ E-flat major concerto with
the orchestra. They do say he is
a very gifted artist, one of the
coming "big shots,' and able to
give a brilliant showing to this
bravura number of Abbe Liszt.
We'll be listening!
