Sabbath (Chamisho Osor b'Shvat) Readings of the Torah Pentateuchal portion—Ex. 13:17-17:16. Prophetical portion—Judges 4:4-5:11. January 22, 1932 Shvat 14, 5692 Jewish Arbor Day. Saturday, January 23, is Arbor Day on the Jewish calendar. Chamisho Osor b'Shvat, known also as Rosh Hashonah Le' Ilonoth, the New Year of the Trees, is a traditional festival, observed by Jews throughout the world, honoring not only the time when Jews were an agricultural peo- ple but also the present efforts for the re- generation of Israel on its ancient soil. What is especially significant in the cele- bration of Chamisho Osor b'Shvat is that it is glorified by the children. Wherever there• are Jews, especially in Hebrew schools, special programs mark the festival, and Palestinian fruits are served. But in Palestine proper the children are particu- larly concerned with this holiday. The chil- dren have made of the holiday a Chag ha- Eilonim, the Festival of the Trees. They are not satisfied with the mere eating of fruits from blossoming plants. They aid in the reforrestation of the land by planting trees. The fact that it has become a tradi- . tion 'for the children of Palestine to plant trees on this holiday makes the festival stand out as a great occasion in the Jewish year. In the Diaspora, the children of Palestine are being emulated by the planting of trees in Zion. Every man and woman, every child, is asked by the Tree Fund of the Jewish Na- tional Fund to plant a tree in the Land of Israel and to carry on a beautiful tradi- tion. It is a custom like this one that helps to beautify Jewish life, at the same time aid- ing in a great reconstruction movement. The barren land of Palestine is being caus- ed to blossom forth again because men and women, boys and girls, are planting and de- veloping roots for a redeemed physical and spiritual Zion. A Noteworthy Book Elsewhere on this page appears a review of Rabbi Goldman's "A Rabbi Takes Stock." Here is a volume which, both for the diversity of the subjects it covers as well as for the courage with which the author views them, stands out among the most im- portant of the recent additions to Judaica. Rabbi Goldman's volume stands out as of particular value because of the manner in which it approaches the two subjects of religion and nationalism. With science and internationalism making serious inroads upon both, the author's views deserve ser- ious consideration. In his preface to this interesting volume, Rabbi Goldman offers an interesting explanation of both subjects. "Religion," he writes, "has embraced demons, taboos, scruples, and human sacri- fice ; yet, to many it has come to mean the determination to build Utopia and the con- viction that it can be done. So, also, nation- ality has inspired militarism, war, auto- cracy, imperialistic ambitions ; but to many it has meant the totality of a people's lof- tiest aspirations and its cultural achieve- ments—the personality of a people." Recognizing that the latter understand- of both religion and nationality are best expressed in Jewish experiences and in Jewish ethical teachings, Rabbi Goldman has offered an explanation of certain Jewish terms, for modern readers, which deserves the widest possible audience. A Charming Visitor. It is to be regretted that the Jewish com- munity of Detroit should have been de- prived of the pleasure of welcoming and entertaining one of the most charming per- sonalities, who visited Detroit last week. Sir Norman Angell, one of the sincerest friends of the Zionist movement in Christ- ian ranks, did not stay in Detroit long enough to be greeted by local Zionists, but he took occasion to express his views to the representative of The Detroit Jewish Chron- icle, thus in some measure fulfilling a gen- uinely sincere desire to be of service to the Zionist cause wherev he goes. Sir Norman. assn s us he will take ad- vantage of the liest opportunity to re- turn to Detro , and to meet with Jewish spokesmen, i an effort to be of service to the movement for Palestine's reconstruc- tion.' Should such a planned visit material. ize, we assure local leaders that is will be their privilege to meet one of the noblest champions of Zionist ideology. The distinguished Englishman's advice through these columns to the Jews of De- troit is that Jewry should begin to approach the Palestinian problem with understand. ing. In this advice there is more truth than poetry. The reason for the slow progress of Jewish work in Palestine is as much a lack of Jewish understanding as it is a lack of English and Arab understanding. The sooner Jews understand their own needs, the quicker will be the pace of reconstruc- tion work. A s:D racut The Pro-Palestine Committee. Two noted artists came to Detroit in the past month. Victor Chenkin and Isa Kre- mer won the acclaim of their audiences and of the press. In their latest local appear- ances they have not lost an iota of their artistic magnetism. And yet, their audiences were too meager to cover even the rental costs, let alone the compensation of the ar- tists themselves. How is this to be ex- plained? People, after all, have not quit seeking recreation, and amusement. And Chenkin and Kremer have a popular as well as cultural appeal. Why is it then that Jews should so fail to encourage Jewish artists? Can you answer this one? We can't. The Palestine Labor Campaign. In the meantime adhesions to the Nazi party flow in uninter- uptedly at the various "Brown Houses," no that the boast of Hitler that nearly 50 per cent of the voters in the Reich may be counted upon to support him, even if it contains an element of exaggeration, cannot be to very far from the truth. The Social Democratic party con- cedes that Hitler would poll about 40 per cent of the total votes. In other words, a man disposing of so formidable an array of votes can not possibly be kept out of the government, either as a participant or as sole detainer of power and Europe had better prepare for a Hitler victory within the next few month. No sensational Musso- linesque march on Berlin need now be expected or is now neces- sary. Hitler will attain power without a coup d'etat or a "Putsch." The very institu- tions of democracy which he despises so deeply will carry him into the seats of the mighty. Moreover, time is working for Herr Adolph. And time hap- pens to be equipped with wings on this occasion: the terrible wings of destitution and mane misery. The German people have come to a point where they are frankly desperate and are ready to take a fatal leap into the unknown with Hitler or any other demagogue who promises a quick way out from the eco- nomic wilderness. Germany's experiment in democracy is about to end up in Caesarism. But what of the new Caesar? him to whom he slightingly re- ferred as Victor Savoie, and how almost immediately he came to be the strongest prop and re- generator of the unquestion- ably moribund Italian mon- archy. Between the cup and the lip lies not only many a slip, but with the advent of re- sponsibility the interval may be productive of many a change in policy. CRY OF "JUDEN 'RAUSI" To begin with, as indicative of a change in program, it must have been noticed that the fore- most Hitlerite spokesmen, while lately being rather lo- quacious in the presence of for- eign correspondents have never- theless scrupulously refrained from mentioning the Jewish question. This was no mere oversight. The program of the first hour of Naziism summed up in the cryptic-barbarian cry: "Juden 'Roust" is apparently to be modified by orders from higher up. The Hitler emissar- ies who are in Holland, Belgium, observing what there is to ob- serve, are strangely silent on the subject of Germany's Jews, but so recently the universal subject of their vengeful talk, The truth is that Hitler plans nothing as crudely drastic as an old-fashioned Czarist pogrom or a wholesale expulsion of the Jews in the event of his corn- ing to power. Ile has some- thing far more diabolic up his sleeve, a far more cunning scheme has been elaborated in the inner sancta of the Munich "Brown House." A pogram worthy of Michiavelli has been elaborated in respect to the Jews of Germany, a plan, let it be said, that surpasses the idea of a simple pogrom, in which "the heads of the Jewish rab- ble will roll in the land" by far in cruelty and evil intent.
