shop had fallen on Nathan's leg,
and fractured it. Now he lay per-
fectly still in bed, the injured leg
stretched out stiffly before him.
The doctor had just left, after set-
ing the bone, amid the piercing
yells of Nathan. Old Nathan was
nearly sixty, and had never known
physical pain before. When his
friends or relatives complained of
some illness, he smiled =corn fully,
and wagged his head. What was
that to him? They did not know
how to live, these people. They
were always worrying, scheming.
They didn't trust their God im-
plicitly. They had got out of the
habit of praying, these people.
They neglected their Maker--why
should Ile bother about them?
Every time people complained in
his presence, they were rewarded
with this irrefutable argument.
Until other people's pains, troubles
even those of his closest friends
and relatives, were carefully hid-
den from him. Men and women
were human—they wanted under-
standing, sympathy, not a sniug
"I told you so—look at me" phi-
losophy.
Now he lay there helplessly. Al-
though still asleep, his face distor-
ted with pain. Distorted, so that
his wife who sat at the foot of the
bed, looked at him, and covered
her eyes. Hard to believe that this
thing had happened to her Nathan.
The ways of God were strange.
Irresolutely, she stood up. The
doctor had said that there was
nothing to be done now, except to
keep the leg perfectly still for a
few days. But to sit here alone
with him all the afternoon? The
sight of his tortured face frighten-
ed her, unnerved her. From her
kitchen window, she called to her
next-door neighbor. Would she
sit with her a for few minutes?
The woman came across immedi-
ately,
In whispers, they spoke to one
another at the foot of his bed.
"Any danger?" "God forbid! No.
No danger—only he'll have to stay
in bed for a week—perhaps more.
It will be terribly hard for him."
