The lights of the Temple that had
been put out by the Syrians were
again lit and for eight days a
great and joyous feast was cele-
brated, and Jerusalem again be-
came a busy city, full of life and
happiness. And from that time
on our people remembered the
great and brave acts of the Macca-
bees by celebrating a feast every
year that starts on the twenty-
fifth day of Kislev and lasts eight
days. During that feast little
ligh ts are burned, starting with
one and adding more every eve-
ning until eight lights are lit, and
songs of joy are sung, just as the
Maccabees did at the time they
won back for their people their
capital and their country and
started again the worship of the
one true God in the Temple. This
feast is called Chanukah, or Dedi-
cation, which means the feast that
has always reminded our people of
the time when 016 Temple at Je-
rusalem was given over (dedicat-
ed) again to the worship of the
one true God.
