Ypsilanti, Mich.

Wayne, Mich.

In the spring of 1923, Ypsilanti
was 00tablished as a pioneer settle-
ment by a small band of hardy
frontiersmen, who were pushing
their way west in search of new
adventure and a new home. The
community did not receive its pres-
ent unique and distinguished
name, however, until 10 years
later.
At that time the Greeks were
making a splendid fight against
Turkish tyranny under the leader-
ship of Demetrius Ypsilanti, a pa-
troit whose fame spread around
the world. The freedom-loving
pioneers adopted this great Greek
personality's name, and so it
stands today.
Since its beginning in 1923,
Ypsilanti has become a well de-
veloped city of 13,000. A popu-
lation growth of 50 per cent has
been experienced in the last 10
years. The community is located
just 30 miles west of the city of
Detroit on the main thoroughfare
to Chicago. It is on the rim of
the Detroit metropolitan district;
near enough to that city to enjoy
most of its advantages and yet far
enough removed to maintain com-
munity individualism and to enjoy
the freedom of the smaller city.
It is best to describe Ypsilanti
as being a well balanced com-

munity. Some cities are developed
wholly along one particular kind
of activity. Not so with Ypsilanti.
The city is prominent education-
ally, being the home of two out-
standing colleges. It is a city of
homes. Many people are taking
. up their residence here, even
though their work may take them
into Detroit or other nearby
, cities. The citizens live in a cul-
tural and yet democratic environ-
meat. The many churches, clubs
and institutions of learning and
Ifine entertainment are evidence of
this fact. The city is a prominent
retail trade center, having ap-
proximately 200 retail outlets for
the distribution of all types of
' merchandise and service. There
are 15 diversified manufacturing
establishments. From an indus-
trial standpoint, the community
promises to gain further promi-
nence because of its strategic
location.

Nine School Buildings.

There are nine school buildings,
housing 2,500 students and oper-
ated by a staff of 72 teachers.
Every building is modern and well
equipped, thereby affording the
finest advantages in the field of
public school education.
