So lot us write and speak unreservedly
against the horror of war."
Thus two of the greatest Jews of the pres-
ent century, Max Nordau and Albert Ein-
stein, have alligned themselves with mili-
tant pacifism. It is to the honor of our
people that one of its dominating missions
and ideals should be an aspiration for peace
and an abhorrence for war.

Baron Edmond de Rothschild:
True Son of His People

By PIERRE VAN PAASSEN

Mussolini told me once in the
course of an interview that he
simply detested those who made
him the subject of their articles
and panegyrics. And another
statesman, Monsieur Georges Cle-
menceau, whom I went to ask for
his reminiscences on Theodor
Veszi, began to scowl ominously
and gave me to understand that
the journalists of his day wrote
their opinions and interpretations
of men and events without first
coming to seek the views of their
elders. Still, in the end, both con-
sented to talk. Not so, however,
I'inchas Rutenberg, the engineer
of Palestine, of whom an interna-
tional-copy-hungry squad of news-
paper men suddenly and rather be-
latedly bethought themselves in
September, 1929, when the conse-
quences and news events following
the Arab upheaval began to grow
scarlet every day. To all de-
mands for a statement Rutenberg
returned a curt and emphatic:
"Go to hell." And that was the
end of it. He never relented. Not
even when the dignified represen-
tative of the Mussolini house-or-
gan was pressed into service as
our spokesman. As a matter of
fact it came to such a pass in the
end that Rutenberg, whenever he
noticed one of the press men bear-
ing down on him, rather ostenta-
tiously took a tighter grip on his
cane, which came to make matters
worse, possessed all the hefty di-
mensions of a flourishing young
oak. When Mr. Rutenberg said he
wouldn't talk, he didn't, that was
all.

went through such a mass of vul
gorily and cheap pandering in al
my life. Save for the craftsman
like histories of the House o
Rothschild, which have appeared
in recent years, nearly the entir
output of the press on the subjec
of the present baron's personality
reads like the veriest drivel. As I
went along the conviction grew in
me that these scribes had not only
never seen their man, but that
they hail not approached within a
mile of gauging the significance
of his life. However, the lack of
insight and the paucity of data
had not deterred them in the least.
With a monkish patience some very
excellent writers had struggled to
round out articles which, in the
end, revealed nothing. Whenever
they seemed on the verge of say-
ing something worth-while, they
promptly deformed their thoughts
with a new outburst of adulation.
They had racked their brains to
find something new, something
more sensational, more bizarre.
Sometimes it seems to have been a
contest between them, a race to
find the most laudatory phrases.
They had become the victims of a
competition.
They hail examined the exterior
of the baron's house, they wrote
of its imposing aloofness, its se-
clusive dignity. They gave long
lists of the art treasures in his
salons. They went into raptures
over the baron's children, his rela-
tives, his servants. Any chance re-
mark dropped by Lord Rothschild,
by M. Maurice or Mr. James
Rothschild, was pounced upon as
a rare pearl of sagacity. But of
the baron himself not a whisper,
not the most innocuous pronuncia-
mento. I do not criticize the
style employed by these writers.
