UNEMPLOYMENT EXPERTS

Washington, unlike ancient
Gaul, is divided into four parts:
Politicians, lobbyists, government
clerks and experts. And the
greatest of these ore experts.
And of these experts none glean
and glisten and glow today as the
experts on unemployment.
And of course on a subject like
that there are plenty of the Jew-
ish persuasion.
This week I have heard two my-

IT IS DIFFICULT indeed to keep track of "Who's

Who" in Jewry, national and international.
Sometimes even those identified by so-called au-
thorities are not sure of their position. So it is
quite natural that newspapermen fall into errors.
The other day I said that Charles Steinmetz, former
wizard of the General Electric Company, was a
Jew. I had mentioned that several times during his
lifetime and never was a denial forthcoming. My
authorities I was sure of at the time, but sometimes
it is difficult to check up these statements when we
want to. But in looking over a volume dealing with
what Jews have contributed to America, written
by George Cohen, I find that he, too, has included
Steinmetz in the Jewish list. Regarding this state-
ment I received the following letter:
Dear Mr. Joseph:
In your column Oct. 16 concerning "Chas-
ing Celebrities," reminds me of my intention
to question the accuracy of your statement in
one of your recent columns, which, unless I
am not as well informed on the subject as you
may be, would make you guilty of the very
characteristic tendency of our brethren of mis-
appropriating non-Jewish celebrities, which you
condemn. I refer to your inclusion of the late
Charles Steinmetz among the triunverate of
great Jews with great peculiarities. To the
best of my information. Steinmetz was never
a Jew, and even his father was not a' Jew.
I heard this from a friend in Breslau, where
Charles Steinmetz was born and grew up to
maturity. If, after all, your source of infor-
mation is more authentic than mine, please
accept my apology in advance.

An Avowal of Faith

Editor's Note: The following article hae double significance. Being an

the fact that the translator of the article Is his young niece. • Detroit low

Shina Israel: hundreds and thou-
sands of white-scarved Jews crowd-
ing the temple corridors; chants
ascending toward the cupola, chants
so ancient that they must have
echoed over the waters of Babylon;
furrows of pain which centuries of
suffering have chiseled into the
features of a race; eyes flaming
with enthusiasm, when the prayer
rises to Adonai, the One and Eter-
nal, the prayer founded on an ever-
lasting, basic truth, Shma Israel,
the prayer which never fails to
bring tears to my eyes when
chanted to the Lord of Creation, the

lies began to move in new direc-
tions. We saw Abbe Loisy attempt
to tear from that ancient Catholic
faith the external veil engrafted
upon it by later generations. In
the modern German Catholic move-
ment, we saw the Franz Xaver
Krauses, the Schells, the Eckhardts,
all firmly convinced that only the
discovery of a link between their
religion and modern culture could
rescue that religion-from the spread
of atheism. In the Protestant ranks
this tendency was even more lively.
In his book "Wesen des Christen-
turns," Ilarnack, forerunner of lib-
eral theology, declared the Lard's
Supper meaningless and anyone
who could with conviction utter the
words, "Gott and Me, die Seele
and ihr Gott," a Protestant, all
considerations of the Lord's Supper
notwithstanding. The f a m o u s
preacher of Cologne, Jatho, went
a step farther yet, in stating that
according to the true faith, "Jeder.
mann seinen Gott im eigenen inn-
eren erleben muss."
But what is the signficance of
this turmoil? It is nothing but a
return to Judaism. We have no
need of seeking a God. We have
no need of bargaining with our
God on a 50 or 75 per cent basis.
For our God is the one and eternal,
the infinitely kind, the infinitely
mighty Lord of Creation.
