A Jewish Elmer Gantry.
In "Rabbi Burns," by Aben
Kande! (Covici Friede, $2.50),
the scene of the story is laid in
Los Angeles and plenty of people
in that city are going to spend
hours trying to find out whether
the author actually had living peo-
ple in mind in writing this sardonic
appraisal of the methods by which
Jewish religious affairs are ad-
vanced and of the Jewish leaders
who approve of shading down re-
ligion into a tiny hall wedged in
between social rooms, athletic
meets and golf courses. Certainly
the book will arouse considerable
bitterness among that group of
Jews which feels that such volumes
tend only to increase anti-Semi-
tism and "set Gentiles against us."
On the other hand the book, by
force of its sincerity, which one
senses almost immediatly, may
really have a beneficial effect in
shaming some of our more intelli-
gent Jews out of their habit of
aping the Gentile to such a degree
that certain synagogues are said to
be facsimiles of movie palaces,
churches — anything but syna-
gogues. In other words, in their
desire to become known as Ameri-
cans and still retain their peace
with their conscience Jews are in
danger of losing their birthright!

Rabbi Burns, ambitious, not too
intelligent, willing to kow-tow to
all personages who may help him
up the ladder to fame and fortune,
is called to Los Angeles to take the
pulpit of a synagogue made up,
for the most part, of wealthy Rus-
sian Jews who are incensed at
their German-Jewish neighbors,
who are not willing to accept them
socially. The book opens on a dis-
cussion among the directors, Rabbi
Bunts and Jed Cans high powered
money-extractor, regarding the
rabbi's dream of ■ million-dollar
edifice to house his congregation.

community, Untermeyer, • mem-
ber of the German-Jewish syna-
gogue, is enticed by his interest in

value to many more people in act-
, ing as a judge of what movies they
should see!
The book is bitter, no doubt cut-
ting, and certainly debatable ma-
terial. On the other hand, it is
written so forcibly, so restrained-
ly and so convincingly that it may
make many of as sit up and ques-
tion our religious fervor. If so,
it will be a fine thing for Judaism
that Aben Kanderhas finally writ-
ten the volume it has taken him
five years to formulate. At any
rate, the book cannot be dismissed
lightly. It throws down a definite
challenge to Reform Judaism of
a certain type and to rabbis with
