Rosh Hashonah is known as the Day of Memorial.
Memories of milenniums pass through our mind as
we hear the sound of the shofar. We are reminded
of the Revelation at Mt. Sinai, where our ancestors
heard from the voice of the Almighty that "Ye are
a kingdom of priests and a holy people." The Jew has
taken up the challenge. The life of our forefathers
through both commonwealths pass before our eyes as
we listen to the sounds of the shofar. The very first
city in the Holy Land, Jericho, was conquered by the
mere blowing of trumpets (Joshua vi., 20). We are
reminded of the most glorious period in Jewish his-
tory, of the beauteous Temple of Solomon, as well as
the glories of the second Temple.
Today, however, the west, or Wailing Wall, ap-
pears before our sight. The Jewish people may well
be compared to the west wall. The fate of the two
are similar. The west wall was saved after the de-
struction of the second Temple, while all else was
consumed by fire. The Jew has equally been pre-
served from the consuming fires of the Inquisition
and of anti-Semitic hate. The fate of the west wall
as well as of the Jew bears out the noble prophetic
statement of Isaiah: "When thou walkest through fire,
thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame
kindle upon thee."
We can thus understand why Rosh Ilashonah ser-
mons differ from those of the whole year, in that no
mention is made of government save on the Holy
New Year's Day. On Rosh Hashonah the Jew senses
the various documents that are being prepared re-
garding him. He has too often felt the injustice with
which he has been treated. He prays "cause the
dominion of arrogance to pass from the earth"; may
no government conceive the idea of intentionally mal-
treating the Jewish people.
The shofar inspires within us the same hope that
was felt at the fall of Jericho, namely, that we now
too look forward toward Zion, praying tht no outside
interference appear by saying "cause the dominion
of arrogance to pass from the earth."
Across the continent—in New York, in Chicago, in
Los Angeles—the three largest public banks under
Jewish ownership closed their doors during the past
year of depression, merged or submerged.
Even in Detroit we have seen the proud Jewish
genius for finance seriously impaired.
Jewish business houses, throughout the country,
have fallen by the wayside.
It is only natural that Jews, traditionally "in
trade," should be keenly effected by an industrial
depression such as this which now grips the world.
Certain it is that our people are confronted with
a situation more threatening even than that which con-
fronts our neighbors. One of its first fruits is the agi-
tation against all aliens. Here is a simple method to
combat competition, and one that may come increas-
ingly into vogue.
It behooves the Jew to "watch his step." More-
over, the morality of the Jewish mass is the concern
of each individual Jew. If this was true in the past it
is more true today than ever.
In the face of the depression our enemies will be
quick to jump at any excuse to revive anti-Jewish agi-
tation.
Newly-revealed offenders among the exploiters of
capital—unscrupulous merchants heckled by the urge
for business and the need for money—loose-tongued
agitators tampering with a national conscience—
weak-willed lads falling an easy prey to the induce-
ments of the gang—prohibition profiteers—all these
provide a field for zealous Jewish attention. The
security of the Jew in America is wrapped up in his
regard for his own law and for that of the land in
which he lives.
At this time, when again we scan the horizon of a
new year, let us hope and pray that in the trying
months that lie ahead, we may be protected from the
menacing hand of our enemies—and above all, from
the greater menace of our own frailties.

A Happy New Year to Everybody!
The
Season's
Greetings
d
a
At the approach of the New Year we find incen-
tive to pause in our daily routine and make a sort of
inventory. This annual passing of judgment has
become a custom, and wise custom it is, indeed. As
we glance over the past year in retrospect, we find a
basis for judging the present and perhaps for discern-
ing the outlines of the future.
At once we detect how truly the career of a com-
munity, like the life of an individual, is subject to
high adventure. Almost over night surprising changes
take place, new trends appear, new issues present
themselves. In order to meet these challenges, a corn-
munity, like the individual, must possess an intrepid
spirit, an optimistic faith, a constant courage. One
problem of weighty consequence to Jewish life is the
maintenance of the morale of the various agencies of
spiritual, philanthropic and communal endeavor.
Funds necessary for normal operation are depleted.
Organizations essential to Jewish life are being crip-
pled by failure of budgetary allotments. Because of
the startling industrial smash-up, we have been com-
pelled to enunciate the principle of relief first. While
this principle is logical and defensible, if put into
effect ruthlessly it can do irreparable damage to
established religious, cultural and educational forces.
Once the spirit of an organization is broken, once the
enthusiasm of its personnel is subverted, restoration
becomes a most difficult task. The cost and trouble of
rebuilding in after years may prove a regrettable
burden.
Another matter which we cannot easily ignore is
the new and unexpected problem of adjustment to a
different lower standard of living which families,
formerly well-to-do, have to make, because of changed
circumstances. This process is not confined to any
one location like Detroit; it is world-wide in extent,
and its implications are serious enough to deserve the
close observation and study of leaders in Jewish life.
The question has been asked quite pointedly
whether the millions of dollars for the upbuilding of
Jewish life in America were given because of genuine
loyalty to ideals or simply because our people had a
vast surplus of money and dit not know what to do
with it. Ilow we behave this coming winter will prove
the stamina and texture of the Jewish soul. Will the
American Jew make sacrifices from his reduced means
to protect the structures in religion, in philanthropy
and in education which he reared in the time of
plenty? Now that he is confronted by struggle, hard-
ship and even privation, will he give as willingly
and as nobly?
It is to be hoped that in this time of trial and tribu-
lation, our people, true to a great tradition, will not
yield to adversity, but on the contrary press on the
more bravely.
