mass of Jews in European lands, living as they do among
millions of peoples who are affected by unemployment and
a trying crisis, solution is even now, almost thirteen years
after the war, as remote as it was when the problem first
arose.
Naturally, the situation becomes much worse when
American Jews fall into a class with the unfortunate mas-
ses of Jews in Eastern Europe. It is much worse particu-
larly because the crisis in American Jewry's ranks came so
suddenly, and reaped its harvest with such shocking speed.
Not only did this deadly harvest make tragic inroads upon
a people which not so long ago was one of the most pros-
perous group in the land, but the devastation has robbed
war-stricken Jewries of the only source of relief revenue.

RAGICALLY aggravating this problem is the horrible
fact that there is so little chance of removing prejudice
from employment, which would in turn have made it
possible for Jews in this country to turn to trades and to
new occupations, away from the middle class road. And
doubly tragic is the blindness with which many Jewish em-
ployers, still evidently unaffected by the wave of prejudice
which is embracing Jewry in these United Sates, are paving
the way for discrimination by themselves denying an equal
opportunity to their own Jewish flesh and blood and by
displaying the vilest sort of Jewish anti-Semitism with their
prejudice against Jewish employes.
It is a problem not to be taken lightly. We consider it
the most serious problem of all times. When we read
reports of Jews involved in criminal acts, and then hear our
wise leaders sermonize and inform us authoritatively that
a lack of religion is responsible, we begin to wonder who
is the madder, the young criminal or the unfit leader who
fails to find the right track for his leadership. Because,
frankly, we are amazed that there is not a greater crime
wave than the one we read about, considering the tragic
position of our youth. Evidently most human beings con-
tinue to remain honest even when faced by starvation.
