The year just ended has brought us face to face
with new and complicated problems challenging the
adequacy of our established system of social service
agencies and forcing to our minds and our conscience,
tremendous problems of collection and distribution.
No longer is social service held the responsibility of a
generous and earliest few.
We are passing through an economic cataclysm
of almost universal effect with the result that, as the
community needs have broadened and expanded, the
urgency for an entire revision of our attitude to public
responsibilty has become more pressing. Greater
sensitivity to a more pronounced consciousness of the
obligation to aid by money and organization among
the great numbers, must support the new attitude and
the broadened responsibilities. Added burdens can be
discharged only by a mass effort.
The coming year will subject the entire system of
voluntary help to a rigid test which will determine
whether giving and helping, flow from a casual and
incidental interest in the lives of others or whether our
proud record will be maintained even at the cost of
personal sacrifice and hardship. It is believed that
the Jews of Detroit will honorably discharge their new
responsibility.

Rosh Hashonah
Greetings

JAMES COUZENS

We are on the eve of Rush Hashonah, the Jewish
New Year, and it is again my privilege through the
columns of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle to send greet-
ings to you.
We are reaching the close of the second year of
perhaps the greatest economic' upset this nation has
known. When conditions will improve or our distress
be materially relieved, there are no prophets to say.
However, for the New Year, I express sincere hope
that the Jews of Detroit, in co-operation with other
nationalities, will be able to work out a plan for relief
of this unhappy situation, and with the aid of you all,
we will be able to devise ways and means to prevent a
re-occurrence of these conditions.
The expertness of the Jews in economic subjects
should make them a great figure in devising ways and
means to prevent this happening again.
I wish for you success in this effort and extend
greetings for a more prosperous and happy New Year.

"LET US RALLY OUR SPIRITUAL
FORCES."

OUR PATRONS AND TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE

Many and varied are the thoughts and sentiments
which a retrospect of the year 5691 evokes; foremost
and uppermost among them is the feeling of disillu-
sionment, the keen realization that there is a crisis in
the lives of Israel, aye, in the life of mankind.
We must beware, however, lest the disillusionment
we experience induce in us a feeling of despair, a
sense of futility. We must bear in mind the vital dis-
tinction between an illusion and an ideal. An illusion
is an escape from reality ; the man who
ho hugs it lives
in a fool's paradise. An ideal, a worthwhile ideal, is a
mental picture of the form reality is eventually to
assume ; the man who cherishes it will shrink from no
sacrifice to translate it into practical life. If this dis-
tinction be fully understood, the prevailing mode of
disenchantment will prove a blessing in disguise. It
will stimulate us to pursue our God-given task with
increased effort and renewed vigor.
The supreme purpose of the sacred season, known
in the idiom of our religious language as "the awe-
inspiring days," is to free us from all illusions and to
panoply us with great ideals. It is the season of the
soul's awakening. It exhorts us to turn to realities
and to see life "steadily and see it whole." It holds
out to us the glorious vision of man made over. It
bids us do all within our power to bring about the ful-
fillment of the vision.
But if this purpose is to be achieved, we must once
more turn to the "wells of salvation," whence count-
less generations have grown faith and hope. We must
above all rally round the synagogue, our perennial
source of inspiration and comfort.

We are equipped to give quick
service with shop cars.

By RABBI JOSEPH EISENMAN

Rosh Hashonah marks the end of the old and the
beginning of the new year. We have gone through a
serious depression, spiritual as well as economic. The
distress has been most acute and we have been keyed
to a high pitch all year. Let us pause for a moment
from our daily grind. Let us relax. Let us re-examine
and take inventory of our moral and spiritual values.
What is the purpose of our existence? Is it to
create wealth, to roll in luxury, to deny ourselves no
pueasures, regardless of cost? Shall we sacrifice all
our spiritual values on the altar of materialism? Will
mankind be happier when love, truth, justice, honesty,
chastity, sanctity no longer abide with us? No, life
without these values would not be worth living.
"What availeth it for man if he gain the whole world
and lose his own soul?"
At present we are passing through a difficult
period of transition. Mankind is restless and discon-
tented. The revelations of science have confused and
bewildered the masses. The millennium has not yet
arrived. We cannot afford this spiritual depression.
which is robbing humanity of its happiness. We must
preserve our spiritual treasures at all costs for upon
the "Torah, Avodah and Gemilluth Ilasodim" our
world is founded.
First and foremost, we must believe in our Creator
and the immutability of His laws. There can be no
conflict between science and true religion on this point.
We must follow His precepts.
Let us rally our spiritual forces, right the wrongs
we have imposed on our fellow men and we cannot
fail to enjoy a happy and prosperous New Year.
