WICKERSHAM REPORT RAPS DEPORTATIONS • 5,692 Jewish I m m i g r ants Admitted to U. S. During Year Ended June 30. WASHINGTON.—(J. T. A.)— The threat of renewed efforts to have Congress enact legislation calling for the registration and fingerprinting of all aliens resident in the United States is contained in an oral statement given by Repre- sentative John L. Cable of Ohio, a majority member of the }louse, Committee on Immigration. Last year Congressman Cable was au- thor of one of three bills intro- duced into Congress proposing compulsory registration of aliens. "At the coming session of the seventy-second Congress," he said. "I shall not only renew my proposal for alien registration but shall ex- ert every possible effort to bring about its enactment into law." Mr. Cable indicated that he would utilize the unemployment distress as a method for winning support for his immigration measure. 'The bill," he declared, "would give Americans every chance and would bar the cooling of undesirables. It would constitute a census of aliens in this country." Mr. Cable fur- ther expressed his opinion that for- mer presidents and secretaries of labor have endorsed the principle of the proposal and it his belief that President Hoover is in sympathy with the measure. Opponent. Fight Bill. "If you travel in Europe," the Congressman added, "you will find almost every country on the conti- nent requires Americans to go to the police station to be registered foreigner—moves from one hotel or boarding house to another, the boarding house to another, the American must report the change tothe police." Among the objections to the pro- posals for registration as voiced by distinguished Americana is one which points out that the measure is contrary to the American tradi- tion of personal liberty. As a re- sult of the efforts of public leaders who are hostile to such legislation the two bills introduced into the House last year and the hills intro- duced into the Senate failed of passage. The opponents of the measure plan to continue their efforts at the forthcoming session of Congress. Meanwhile regulations calling tot the registration of aliens have also become the subject of state legis- lation in Michigan where the legis- lature passed and the governor signed a bill which is now up before Federal District Court. Court pleas for and against the constitu- tionality of this state legislation have already been made and the decision is now being awaited. Hit Deportation System. Rabbi Jaffa's Activities. In recent years the Union has sent out regional rabbis and field men to minister to the spiritual again and again while nothing comes of the talk. More than once a manager announced that he will produce a play only to change his mind. It is even whispered among the more suspicious followers of the contemporary theater that a shoestring producer uses the fall theatrical forecast as a bait where- with to catch ready financial back- ers. Here, however, are the re- ports as of the month of August. You may winnow away as you please. It is unnecessary to enter at length upon the part played by the Jewish producers.
