manuscript material in it, there are
the following printed documents:

"A lottery announcement of

"An act to enable the Mickve

The volume also contains nu-

Letter by Carlyle.

Of the letters of the post-revo-

ally interesting. As Mr. Coleman
has described them, one is by
Judah P. Benjamin, the Confed-
erate secretary of state, dated
London, Nov. 1, 1874, to his
friend Lawley, in which he com-
ments significantly about a few of
the eminent Southern leaders in
the Civil War. The other is it let-
ter by Thomas Carlyle addressed
from his Chelsea home in London,
Jan. 2, 1846, to Abraham Hart of
Carey & Hart, Philadelphia, pub-
lishers. In the letter he thanks
Mr. Hart for the sum of £50 which
he paid him through the courtesy
of a "Mr. Emerson of Concord,"
for the edition of his book "Mis-
cellanies," which had some time
before been published in Philadel-
phia..
"I accept this money," writes
the dour Carlyle, "as a very grati-
fying proof that there are men-
not very frequent, alas--who do
not need the condition of a con-
tract to do what beseems them in
matter of traffic." This letter is
