possibilities of oppression in legislation.
Tried by a thousand fires of persecution, it
is natural that Jews should be the first to
protect and rebel against legislation which
will create new ghettos and which will seg-
regate one human from another and place
him in a class with criminals.
And an even more important reason why
it is natural that Jews should be in the lead
in it tight against oppressive legislation of
the type of the Cheeney Alien Registration
Bill is because we recall with horror the
passport system of the Russia of the days of
the Czars. Ilaving tasted of the knout of
the Cossack and of the cruelties of a sys-
tem which placed every citizen at the mer-
cy of the police, we seek to prevent the
American communities from becoming in-
fected with the germs of hate and oppres-
sion and Czarism. To this end the fight is
on, and the leaders of the opposition to
the alien registration act now have the en-
couragement of all liberty-loving Ameri-
cans who sense the dangers that are hid-
den in this bill.
