BIBLE READING IN
SCHOOLS OPPOSED

Views of Opponents.
In opposing the proposed Bible
evading measure, M r. Gorman
slid: "We are running a school
system for all, of every class, color'
or creed. This measure will only
stir up latent religious friction.,
and it is contrary to the spirit of
the free public school."
Dr. Shurley, president of the
board, said he believed the meas-
ure was unconstitutional, and
added that in his opinion religion
should have no place in the schools.
Dr. McLean pointed out that there
are 27,000,000 children in public
schools throughout the nation, and
2:3,000,000 attending Sunday
schools. "This show's that the par-
ents and the churches have not lost,
their grip of this problem." he ;
said. "Religion is a matter for
the home and the church, not the
Public school."
Text of Bill.
The text of the bill reads: "That
the teacher in charge shall provide
for a reverent daily reading of a
suitable portion of the Bible in all
class rooms or assembly rooms of
he public schools, and prayer may
be offered or the Lord's prayer re-
peated; but no pupil shall be re-
quired to participate and, upon
written request of such a parent
or guardian, any pupil shall be ex.
cased from the room during such
Bible reading or prayer."
"The last clause alone shows
what opposition its backers know
it will stir up," said Mr. Gorman.
"I do not think it is the thing at
all for a city the size of Detroit.
"Our school system is for all
these people. P. e have no right to
force the Bible down the throats
of those who do not want it."
