WAXMAN'S AMBITIOUS
AND SCHOLARLY WORK

fraternal anb Club Notes

Dr. Meyer Waxman has written
"A History of Jewish Literature,"
the first volume of which was re-
cently published by the Bloch
Publishing Co. The second and
final volume will be ready next
year. This ambitious, comprehen-
sive and scholarly work has been
in preparation many years. The
first volume traces the work of
Jewish writers and Jewish litera-
ture from about 400 B. C. to the
end of the twelfth century. It it
no mere bibliography of Jewish
books or biographical study of
Jewish writers but a thorough dis-
cussion of the trends, flairs, and
highlights of the produce of the
Jewish mind in literature. Among
the topics touched upon and
studied are Apocryphal and Apo-
calyptic literature, the develop-
ment of the lialakah, Hellenistic
literature, the Talmud, Bible
exegesis, rabbinic literature. phi-
losophy and theology of Judaism,
mysticism, Karaite literature and
an extensive study of Hebrew
poets and poetry.
This book, which sells for $3.50,
contains 500 pages, an index,
chronological tables and illustra-
tions. It is an indispensable itenf
for anyone who dares profess a
true interest in literature.
Dr. Waxman is professor of
Bible and Jewish philosophy in the
Hebrew Theological College In
