A Detroit Jew's philanthropic
effort in the present unemploy-
ment crisis ranks as one of the
most important charitable under-
takings by individuals in this
country.
On Jan. 4, Herman Radner of
Detroit, president of the Walker-
ville Brewery of NValkerville, Ont.,
opened a free lunch room to supply
meals to needy and unemployed.
The lunch room has since fed more
than 10,000 a week, asking no
questions and distributing as much
food as any individual will eat.
When the lunch room opened, Mr.
Radner was paid a great tribute
by the Canadian communities bor-
dering on Detroit by closing the
municipal free kitchen in East
Windsor, the IN'alkerville Brewery
free lunch room mince having filled
the needs of the Border Cities.
Since that time, Mr. Radner has
been lauded from the floor of the
Windsor Council on numerous oc-
casions. Alderman Caple spon-
sored a resolution to thank the
Liquor Control Board of Ontario
for permitting the Walkerville
Brewery to open the free lunch
room. The resolution was carried
unanimously. The council also
adopted a resolution presented by
Dr. Gardner thanking Mr. Radner
personally.
On numerous other occasions,
members of the Windsor Council
lauded Mr. Railner's project, and
elsewhere, including churches, the
Detroit Jewish young man's
charitable deeds have received.
