GILBERT'S
SAMUEL GETTELSON
, of 555:1 Maxwell avenue, 54 year,
' old. died on Feb. 12. Funeral
, services were held on Feb. 13, with
I internment at Machpelah Cemetery.
Rabbi Aishiskin officiated. Ile is
survived by than sons, Ben, Israel
and Louis, and three daughter s,
Dora, Sadie and Mrs. Anne Docks.
With thousands of people com-
ing to Southern California, at the
very peak of the tourist season, an
increasing number of visitors jour.
ney out to a little town some 20
miles east of Los Angeles, to visit
the national Jewish tuberculosis
sanatorium there. For the Los An-
geles Sanatorium has become a ver-
itable landmark, reflecting SO viv-
idly the essence of that southern
land, that it has become an unfor-
gettable experience to look upon
I "Philanthropy, California Style."
The sanatorium, like California
itself, has been built up by the peo-
ple of all parts of the Canted
States; its buildings bear the names
of the cities that gave them-Cleve-
land, Chicago, Philadelphia, San
Francisco, Detroit, and so on down
the avenues. But there, in the des-
ert oasis, one looks in vain for the
formal walks, the brick walls, the
imposing buildings that generally
comprise an institution. Rose
bordered paths wind among lush
gardens, set in the very heart of
the orange groves, and rambling
cottage pavilions, reminiscent of
old missions and haciendas, open
wide doors to sunny verandas.
The 220 men and women shelter.
ed there have fled to it from every
corner of busy, hustling America;
great industrial renters and small
communities alike yield their quota
of victims to the White Plague, and
among them are these, and hun-
dreds like them, whose only hope,
lies in the sunny lowland. But here
the tense struggle for existence is I
forgotten, the languid, lazy south
land lulls them to the rest that ,
■ lone can save them.
Funds for the maintenance of
the sanatorium come to it from the'.
entire country and that, unless the
Jewish communities of America ,
all do their share. the institution .
cannot carry on. But its actual ad-
ministration rests in the hands of
the Los Angeles Jewish people who
in the name of American Jewry,
founded the Sanatorium and built
it to its present eminence. The ac-
tive beard of directors is composed
of Los Angeles residents and the I
National Advisory Board is headed
by Mr. Marco R. Newmark, whose'
father pioneered in California and ;
founded there the great business!
house that bears his name.
A special hospitality committee
has just been established by the I
women of Los Angeles. This tom- .
mittee is composed of local social
leaders. wives of business men, mo-
tion picture magnates and other
nationally known figures. Mrs.
Henry Kern is chairman, and
among its members are Mrs. Jack
Warner, Mrs. Cecil B. DeMille,,
• Mrs. Louis B. Mayer, Mrs. Edgar ;
F. Magnin and Mrs. John Kahn.
