shin when the same subject was
discussed with the high commis-
sioner, he exposed the govern-
ment's policy of unsound land
taxation, if free land grants to
Arabs above their needs, of with-
holding state lands from Jew's, as
the contributing causes of the high
land price Arabs require and re-
' ceive from Jews.
Ussishkin has been accused of
extremism, of hostility to the
Arabs and of exaggeration of the
Zionist claims. In reality he has
been but consequent and logical-
, a realist of realists. Palestine can-
not become two national homes.
It was promised as the scene of a
Jewish national home. Nut just
by Britain or the great powers but
by the Supreme Deity. Hence,
Jews must have room in it to settle
and to grow. He would forego
British help but he demands that
there be no obstructions. lie be-
. heves that the Palestine adminis-
tration has hampered the Jews.
Today when Zionists are startled
by the great betrayal of the Labor
government, Ussishkin is calm.
when the Palestine community
was, for the moment, stunned by
the issuance of the recent White
Paper, his was the reassuring
voice. Not violence or despair,
was his counsel. He reminded the
public that what Rome could not
do or Turkey oppose, even a Brit-
ish White Paper would not achieve
—the National home ideal would
stand.
If Palestine is not rebuilt by the
Jews in this decade, he has said,
their chance is lost for genera-
tions. "In our time" is the prayer
, on his lips, as he now seeks the I
cooperation of American Jewry.
