DR. KARL LANDSTEINER
GETS 2 NOBEL PRIZES
FROM KING OF SWEDEN

STOCKHOLM, Sweden. — (J. T.
A.)—Prof. Karl Landsteiner, Jew-
ish medical man from the United
States, received two Nobel prizes
Dec. 10, from King Gustave of
1Sweden for the year 1930. Land-
l.(7 1 steiner received the prizes for sa-
1 A-,complishments in the fields of phy-
siology and medicine. During the
':'71ceremony Rector Iledren highly
praised Prof. Landmteiner's work,
declaring that his blood-test dis-
coveries have saved thousands of
•- • human lives.
Local newspapers, while men-
tioning the fact that during the
presentations of the prizes Swe-
dish students waved the national
flags of Austria, recall the fact
that Landsteiner, who was born in
Austria, was persecuted in his own
country because he was a Jew.
They also mention the fact that
1 : Landsteiner was not admitted into
German universities because he re-
fused to be baptized into Christ-
ianity. Prof. Landsteiner had to
endure continual hardships in Eu-
rope until he was invited by the
Rockefeller Institute in the United
States, where he could conduct
his scientific researches undisturb-
ed.

A nightmare, a torture of ages oppressed);
It utterly failed, and it faded and dwindled;
We gathered curses whenever we blessed

The eighth, oh, the eighth! see a star is yon rising
To crown with success our yet unceasing toil!
The eighth is the pillar of our restoration,

It trembled an instant, it flared and was dead;
Judah's luster was waning, her past a delusion,

The third showed a dent and methought that grim shadows
Were trying to hide its still lingering flame;
It soon broke in twain and it crumbled asunder;
Two kingdoms arose, each one distinct in name.

The second loomed up in most singular brilliance,
And visions of peace filled our soul with a thrill;
It hailed the first kingdom of Judah's inception,
Of Judah in splendor through Destiny's will.

Chanukah Greetings to Our Jewish

VIENNA.—(J. T. A.)—Three
Catholic monks saying kaddish •
(the prayers of the dead) for a
converted Jewish baron startled a
local synagogue congregation out
of its customary Sabbath equani-
mity. The monks entered the syna-
gogue in the middle of the service
and stayed to the end to say the
kaddish. Asked for an explanation ,
by the elders of the congregation
after the service, the monks told
the following story. They had
conic to say kaddish in accordance
with the terms of the will of the
late Baron Otto von Taussig. The
baron, who was born a Jew, be-
ca me a convert to Christianity and
then military adjutant to the late
Emperor. In this capacity he ac-
companied the Emperor to the city
of l'rzemysl where the Jews re-
ceived them with the traditional
bread and salt.
Among those Jews was a girl
with whom the baron fell in love,
but the parents of the Jewess re-
fused to give their consent to mar-

riage although the baron agreed to
return secretly to Judaism. As a
result of this the baron became

Eight candles were burning and glowing and g:eaming,
They smouldered low and they fluttered high;
They had all the semblance, they had all the seeming
of flickering freedom—a gasp and a sigh.
