BRANDEIS OBSERVES
HIS 74TH BIRTHDAY

WASHINGTON.-Justice Louis
D. Brandeis spent Thursday work-
ing pretty much as usual, even
though it was his seventy-fourth
birthday. The occasion passed
quietly with the justice engaged in
court work at his residence, the
Supreme Court being in recess,
preparing opinions in a large num-
ber of cases. Appointed by Presi-

BARCUS DESCRIBES
LIFE IN MOSCOW

That the Public May Fully Understand the Present Boycott Situation,
The Jewish Master Bakers Association Present the Following Facts:

The boycotters' chief cry seems to be that baking materials have been greatly
reduced, the chief ingredient, flour, for instance, has been reduced 50 per cent. As
a matter of fact, the decrease in the price of flour is a dollar to a dollar and one-half
a barrel. Now, then, every barrel of flour produces 160 loaves of bread, and a de-
crease of material means a gain in the baking industry of about one cent per loaf.
The boycotters ask for a decrease of five cents per loaf, or a decrease of 40 per cent.
Moreover, the gain which the bakers have of one cent is eaten up three-fold because
of business today being decreased 30 per cent.
The overhead of the Jewish baking industry still remains the same as form-
erly. Our rents, heat, insurance, advertising, depreciation of machinery, machin-
ery repaired, auto and delivery expenses and especially
the high wages paid to our
bakers, are facts which the boycotters do not realize.

THE WAGES PAID TO OUR BAKERS ARE THE HIGHEST PAID TO ANY
ORGANIZED GROUP OF BAKERS IN THIS CITY OR ELSEWHERE IN THE
UNITED STATES.

THE BAKERY PROPRIETORS IN THIS SITUATION ARE HELPLESS.
WE CANNOT AFFORD TO CUT THE PRICE OF BREAD WITH THE PRES-
ENT WAGE SCALE IN EXISTENCE, AND THE WORKERS ABSOLUTELY
REFUSE TO ACCEPT A CUT IN WAGES. WE THEREFORE APPEAL TO
THE GOOD JUDGMENT OF THE PUBLIC TO STEP IN AND ARBITRATE.
WE WILL PERMIT ANY DISINTERESTED PARTIES TO EXAMINE OUR
RECORDS, AND IF AFTER INVESTIGATION IT IS FOUND THAT THERE
ARE PROFITS, WE WILL BE WILLINGTO TURN THOSE PROFITS OVER TO
THE PUBLIC.
