The lesson in the results of this test is not to be taken lightly. Long before Carlyle said that "the history of the world is the history of great men." For generations peoples have been inspired by biography, by the achievements of the world's gen- C 4 iuses. It is perhaps to the worst detriment of our people that our youth does not know the stories of Jewish heroes, that young Jews are not acquainted with the Jewish personalities who made Jewish and world history. Let such study be encouraged and furthered and Jewry will gain from It strengthened devotion and loyalty from its youth. of anti-Semitism in Germany. One cannot measure the anti-Semitic sentiment in Ger- many by the strength of the Hitler group in the Reichstag, since not anti-Semitism but the general feeling of despair has sent such a large number of National-Socialists to the German parliament. When the first feeling of ,surprise at the National-Socialist victory in Germany wears off, the political world in gen- eral, and the Jews in particular, will reelize that the fear engendered by Hitler's success WAS exaggerated. Soon the Ilitlerites them- selves will learn that one can make flaming speeches against "alien peoples and alien races" in a Munich beer cellar but that one must be somewhat restrained when sitting in parliament, where there is a certain responsi- bility for one's words. The saddest element in the victory of the German anti-Semites is the rise of the num- ber of outspoken Jew-haters in the Reich- stag from four percent in the imperial days to 18.6 percent in the newly elected parlia- ment. But even this figure must not be per- mitted to cause despair in Jewish ranks. A united Jewish front is needed to counteract the threatened dangers, and confidence must rule in Israel's ranks everywhere that even this crisis will pass, to the detriment of the modern liamans. az/ act et44127-4, 14,,, been more than enough without adventuring further into fields far removed from the automobile indus- try. In the meantime we shall await with interest, coupled with uneasiness, the progress of the Hitler movement. Not no many years ago, of course, it was the habit of those who desired to annoy the religious minded to gather together at Yom Kippur balls. All of that is gone now. The atheistically inclined seemingly are pretty nearly all gone, while Yom Kippur goes marching on—as ever. A YOUNG man who visited Oberammergau and witnessed the Passion Play, called to see me the other day to relate an interesting incident. After attending the play, which lasted from morn- ing until evening, he went to a restaurant in the village. It was crowded and the waiter asked him if he had any objection to seating others at his table. Agreeable to the suggestion, a few moments later three or four men sat down with him and he Immediately recognized them as Oberammergau players. One of them portrayed the part of Judas, and he opened a conversation with the young man in question, who he recognized as a Jew. Judas said that all of them recognized that there was criticism of the Passion Play by the Jews because it was charged that the play offended them. And he was eager to discover in what way the presentation was offensive to the Jews. This, my acquaintance could not point out except to say that it made him, as a Jew, feel "uncomfortable." It seems that there is a desire on the part of those associated with the play to do what they can to correct those parts that may be objectionable to the Jew. Frankly, I do not see how that is possible because the very drama- tization of such a tragedy as the death of Jesus, and showing the part that the Jews directly or indi- rectly played in that tragedy, is, in itself, enough to create prejudice that no pruning can possibly eliminate. THE OLDEST OLDEST YOM KIPPUR STORY The oldest Yom Kippur story, I believe, is the one about the Jew who came to the rabbi asking for forgiveness. "Rabbi, I committed a great sin —I didn't make a benediction be- fore eating." "How is it that you failed to env a Beracha?" "Well, you see, rabbi, I didn't wash my hands before eating, so I couldn't say the Beracha." "Well, why didn't you wash your hands?" "Well, you see, rabbi, I was eat- ing some ham, and I could hardly go through the ritual washing for that." "How comes a Jew to eat ham?"
