WILL THERE BE AN ARMISTICE HERE?

Rosh Hashonah Greetings and Best Wishes

Michael lay on his bed and he
could not sleep. The mechanics of
his brain were throbbing at full
speed, revolving round the thought
that as soon as he had got a jots,
he must start writing seriously—
no, not for mere worldly gain, but
art for art's sake. Let's see, what
could he write about? Ile visual-
in.,' romances, countryside scenes,
russet-hued leaves, stirring and
piquant anti-climaxes; and in the
innocence and ultra-sophistication
of youth, he daringly handled and
fondled themes of husband and
wife quarrels and reconciliations.
Well, a few weeks later, Michael
got his job all right. And with the
world's workers, and his face shin-
ing red from soap soul water and
brisk towelling. He was bright and
efficient in his work, and fur this
his boss liked him. His associates
liked him because he was quiet, re-
served, and because they did not
know he was a Jew.

And in the evenings, he wrote.
He covered pages upon pages in
neat handwriting, conjuring up
images of husbands and wives and
quarrels and reconciliations. And
in a daring moment he even wrote ,
a "Fragment," as he termed it,
the Soul of Music, the Soul of the
Composer and the Soul of the Aud-
ience meeting in solemn conclave
to discuss the Decline of Modern'
Music. And regularly, as clock-,
work, these manuscripts were re-
turned to him promptly by editors
with a curt "The Editor Regrets Ile
is Unable to Use Your Manuscript,
but Thanks You, etc."
And he began to get really wor-
ried about it and hopeless too, Could
it be that his teachers were all
wrong, and that he could not write?
Perhaps he needed a university ed-
ucation. What was wrong? Ile read
through the manuscripts again and
again. Perhaps he was too young.

And one evening it came to him
like an illuminating flash. Ile would'
write about the tenement in which
he lived, And feverishly he de-
scribed the worry and the scurry
and the joys and the sorrows of the
people with whom he lived. Of;
Mrs. Goldstein, who complained
loudly every Monday morning when
the rent-collector called, that her
ceiling Was cracking and her dire
prediction that one fine morning the
Rosenstein family would come
crashing down into he bedroom. Of
Mrs. Camper, who when her girl
was 18 years of age was looking
for a doctor to marry her off, at 19
a dentist, at 20 a shoe-store mana-
ger, at 21 for a master tailor, and
now, when her daughter's age was
shrouded in mystery, even an un- ,
der-presser of children's knickers'
would be accepted. Of Mr. Sam-
uels, who boasted to all the neigh- ,
hors that he had always managed
to cure all his ailments without the
aid of doctors, and who, at the
slightest pain, was the first to run
surreptitiously to a doctor, with a
face as long as a funeral procession.
Of the loud ailments of Mrs. Zei-
denbeitel that now talkies had come
to stay, her Sammy, who played
"violin" at the "Conservatory"
would never be aisle to become a
Ileifetz or a Kreisler
.
Michael Lesser is now a young
writer of repute. Ile is pointed out
as that "young author who writes
so cleverly about East-End Jewish ♦
life. Yes. And so young, too!"
But no one knows how nearly he
failed to become a writer.--(Lon-
don Jewish World.)
