"I'm sure of it," she replied, her
brown eyes looking directly into
his.
When he left her at her door he
asked, "Well , what are we going to
do tomorrow?"
The next morning Belle got up
earlier than usual. She had a red
crepe dress that she wanted to wear
but certainly she could not wear
her brown coat with it, nor her old
coat which she had worn the first
evening she went out with Harry
Samuels. Though it meant riding
up-town two stations, she stopped
off at her married sister's, left her
old coat, and took Mildred's black
cashmere which, with the brilliant
red of the dress, became an en-
chanting ensemble,
Harry Samuels expressed his ad-
miration and again Belle showed
him the city. This time he told
her how lonesome it was living in
Lynn Falls all alone, eating his
solitary meals at the Commercial
House, building up his business
with not a relative in the world to
work for. Did she honestly ',e-

I asked if they couldn't spend the
evening at her home since he would
like to meet her family. Belle wel-
comed the suggestion with greater
eagreness than she showed and
promptly invited him to dinner.
When he had gone out of the office
she became feverishly busy on the
telephone. She commanded her
sister Mildred to set the table,
' bringing over her bridal silverware
, and an Italian lace tablecloth she
had never dared to use.
A downtown fruiterer was in-
structed to deliver avocados for a
salad which Mildred was to pre-
pare. She telephoned her mother
who, following explicit instructions
from Belle, cooked and baked and
dusted, punctuating her labors
with audible sobs. She would lose
her Belle. When would they see
her? Who could travel so far?
When would she come back to New

I it was for the best. Belle wasn't
