years of this century when there
was hardly a small town without
its single Jewish family, living a
, life apart amidst their neighbors,

and an eye for business—but with-

them.
I had just checked my grips at I
the Commercial (louse and started
out to look over the town before
I calling on my firm's customers the
•next morning. In those (lays I mold
harnesses, so that will give you an '
idea how long ago it was.
Hardly had I started my stroll
down Main street when I felt :
someone spring to my side, grab ,
my arm in a firm grip and drag mel
into a store. Bewildered, it took
me some moments to get accus-!
tooted to the dim light of the cloth-
Mg store in which I found myself
and to the eager face that was
peering into mine.
"A Jew?" he asked, and waited
for my reply with bated breath.
At my not he cast his eyes hefty-
' enward, murmuring a prayer of
thanksgiving. You will come
home with me," he declared. "Not
for nothing would I leave you to
sleep the night in that Commercial
House. And you must eat at a
Jewish table. Oh, you don't know
how long it is since I AIM a Jewish
face and spoke a Jewish word."
I could easily see that it was not
concern over my welfare which
prompted his invitation, but the
deep, the poignant loneliness of the
Jew who has dwelt long by him-
self. I waited until he closed the
store and went along the quiet
streets with him.
His house lay across the rail-
road tracks in the poorer section
of the town. When he unlocked
the door, hot, pent-up air rushed
out to greet us. He turned to me

meal!"

The meal was meagre enough.
Most of the things were dry and
stale. They had all come from
New York, he announced proudly.
A kindly cousin shopped for him
and sent him the less perishable
foodstuffs without which, he de-
clared to me, he would die.
"Buried, that's what I am," he
told me as we faced each other
scion the bare table. "But," his
eyes lit up, "not for long! I tell
you they can't keep Sol Grand here
for long." With a ruthless ges-
ture he pushed the plates aside,
leaned both arms on the table and
told me of his plans. lie was work-
ing 18 hours a day, eating, sleep-
ing and planning. Ile wanted to
go home. Oh, not to New York, he
had hardly seen that city when he
landed and was routed by relatives
to a town much like this one.
There he had had a clothing store,
too, and had poured the years of
his youth into the business which
stubbornly would not prosper.

papers are full of biographical ma-

replete with tales of his arrests,

The papers are specially recall-
