And strangely enough, just as this Holy Day is conse- crated to our Great Dead, and is devoted to the solemn ritual of self analysis, Rosh Ilashonah marks many an integrating and optimis- tic era in our history. For exam- : pie, we are told that Rosh Ila- shonah is considered to be the birthday of our Patriarchs; that it is the day on which Joseph was freed from prison; and we are even told that Rosh Ilpshonah marks the anniversary of the creation of man, and moreover it is the anni- versary of the creation of the world. In short, tradition pours into this festival all the elemental backgrounds of mankind, as well as our very own history. No ashes to carry out all winter long, and no soot to track up- stairs— that's the cheerful sort of a winter that owners of gas-fired furnaces face. The fuel trucks will never drive into their yards again, and the carpenters are busy right now making the old fuel- bin over into an airy, modern basement recreation room. In a few weeks these owners will scratch a match—and let their Gas Company tend the furnace for them until spring. Why can't your home be listed among this happy company? Gas-fired furnaces are completely automatic in operation and control, and give the most dependable, healthful heat known. The full facts on gas heating for your home — costs, upkeep, and proven advantages over all other types of fuel—will be given you free of charge or obligation. If you'd like to forget furnace tend- ing forever, and have a more comfortable, better heated home— get these facts today. Just calf your Gas Company. DETROIT CITY GAS COMPANY Cherry 3500 FRANK S. 'We are further told that later Abuye ordered the Jews to eat on Rosh Ilashonah pumpkins, dates, beets, etc., because these grow quickly, and in Arabic their names mean plentiful. In this manner the Jews for the past 2,000 years have come to regard the belated fruits of the season an omen of good luck. The Jews designated their reliance in the goodness of God for the New fear by partak- ing of grapes and honey and all sorts of palatable dishes. More than any other Holy Day on the Jewish calendar Rush Ila- shonah causes all Jews to rally to th efold. It unites us all, old and young, rich and poor, those whose Judaism is known by others than the known shadings and forms. If we do not go to the synagogue to pray, we go as we modern are wont to express it, to hear the Shofar, which is so impressive. If we do not go to work because we are religious, we take those days "off," because our friends are not going to work, and because of re- spect to our elders. Be the season as obvious as it may, or as individ- ualistic and pagan as we wish it to appear, we are swept by the deep significance of Rosh Hashonah and regaled by its festivity. For once on the New Year the border lines ) of antagonism vanish; the various forms of cleavage among the Jews disappear; and what is still more important, new hope rises in our, hearts; new life springs in our' veins; and again we take on cour- age and strength to continue in a cosmos which often reminds us that it is regretful that Rosh Ha- shonah conies only once a year,. and that its significance is felt only by the Jews. Another hope that I dare to en- , tertain as the new year is ushered in is that no one will try to tell again that story about the police- man who stood guarding the syna- gogue at the Rosh Ilashonah services. "('an I go in there?" asked the visitor. You have no ticket." "But I want to go in there just for a minute to see my cousin." "All right," replied the cop, "go in, but if I catch you praying, God help you. ICoPyright. 1930, J. T. FRANKLIN Rabbi, Temple Beth El. To some extent history has been written for the Jew in the year just closing in tears and in blood. But there have been bright spots in the record and the heart of the Jewish people need not be oppressed. It is yet, I believe, too soon to say whether the Jewish Agency will serve, as it was hoped it might, to concen- trate Jewish opinion in regard to the rebuilding of Palestine with no reference to nationalism or a politi- cal state. Some of the leaders on both sides feel that the Agency represents little more than a friendly gesture. We dare be a bit more hopeful as to its pos- sibilities.. Inspires Hope. No serious minded Jew can contemplate the events in the Jewish World (luring 5690 without echoing the cry of anguiSh wrung from the bleeding heart of the prophet for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint." The present state of Israel and Judaism must needs fill us with deep anxiety and apprehension. Yet Rosh Hashonah with its cheering outlook upon life bids us take heart and carry on our task with renewed vigor and energy. SUITE 1955 UNION TRUST BUILDING SEPTEMBER 15th, 1930 The ills from which we are suffering has two forms, the material and the moral, or spiritual. There is, in the first place, the material misery which mil- lions of our people endure, their untoward fate, the disabilities under which they labor, the anomalous and precarious position they occupy, their homeless- ness and helplessness. These evils are beyond our control. We may and should bend all our efforts to reduce them; but it is not within our power to remove them. With regard to these evils Rosh Hashonah brings us the reassuring message of Malcheyoth, God's Providence, that has guided and guarded our people throughout the ages. What God was, lie is, what He did, He does. But there is also the moral (ir spiritual misery from which Israel the world over suffers, the trials which threaten to engulf our Jewish heritage. There is a crisis in our Jewish life. The fortunes of Judaism are at the lowest ebb. Our one preoccupation must be the preservation of our Jewish soul. This task is within the realm of our will. We are the masters of our spiritual destiny. Rosh Hashonah summons us to address ourselves to this supreme task. Ila Rosh Hashonah Greetings to All Don't Suffer After NewlYear We make shoes for all troubled feet right here. WILLIAM E. IIINTZ = 1520 Broadway Cherry 0686 DETROIT, MICA. Greetings and Good Wishes CONSTRUCTION OF NEW SHAAREY ZEDEK AN EVENT OF THE PAST YEAR By A. LOUIS GORDON President, Congregation Shaarey Zedek A new year brings 11 one hopes and new ambitions. A new year makes you look into the future, but you also delve into the past. That which you have ac- complished becomes as nothing compared with that which you propose to accomplish. The Jews of Detroit may look backward with pride upon a successful year. In that year a new edi- fice devoted to the worship of the Almighty and the study of His law has been erected. The new Shaarey Zedek proudly opens its gates to its men, women, boys and girls who have given of their time, their efforts and of their wealth to make it possible. Shaarey Zedek greets the New Year by again opening its doors and resuming its place of worship in Detroit. May I humbly call your attention to the inscrip- tion above the main entrance and just below the Ten commandments carved in stone, "Blessed be he who cometh in the name of the Lord," and it is my prayer that this blessing shall descend on all who enter Shaarey Zedek. In the near future we hope to be able to complete the structure upon which we have worked so long. The task of building a new house of prayer has en- nobled every one who has done anything to make our synagogue a reality. The building provides the facili- ties in which all the religious, education and social activities can be conducted. May the New Year be to the congregation of Israel a year filled with peace, with good, with blessing, with sustenance, a year marked by prosperity and honor.
