Yearbook, Vol. 39, Central'
Conference of American

Rabbis.

Season's Greetings and Best Wishes

The thirty-ninth volume of the'
yearbook of the Central Confer-
ence of American Rabbis has just
appeared. It contains the reports
of the fortieth annual convention
held in Detroit. The volume pic-
tures the growth of the conference
from a small gathering held in De-
troit in 1889 with an attendance
of about 20 to the present organ-
ization with a membership of
nearly 370, scattered throughout
every state of the Union as well as
in Cuba, Canada, and several cities
in England. The publications
committee reported the sale of
over a half-million copies of the
Union Prayerbook and the other
publications of the conference.
In addition to the president's
message of Rabbi II. G. Enelow
and the conference sermon by
Rabbi David Philipson, the volume
contains perhaps the finest group
of papers that the conference has
ever published. Recent archeolo-
gical discoveries in Palestine by
Dr. Nelson Glueck of the llebrew
I Union (7ollege resulted in a resolu-
tion directing the executive board
to undertake some excavation en-
terprise in the name of the con-
Jerenee in co-operation with the
Ilebrew University. A group of
papers on Moses Mendelssohn were
presented in honor of his centen-
ary. They were read by Rabbis
Walter Rothman, Felix A. Levy
and Louis J. Kopalti. Two anni-
versary papers on the past achieve-
' mints and future aims of the con-
ference were prepared by Rabbis
David Lefkowitz anti Edgar F.
Magnin. The religious education
day program presented two studies
of Jewish Reform religious educa-
tion in the last 40 years by Rabbis
Jacob B. Pollak and Solomon A
Fineberg. All the papers has
been reprinted and can be secured
from the authors or from the edi-
tor. The volume represents the
fifteenth prepared and edited by
Rabbi Isaac E. Marcuson
of
Macon, Ga., Secretary of the con-
ference.

Balfour Declaration.
I believe
that this section of our Chronicles
Siwill be a continuation of the first
two Books and willnot be less
lily either in the eyes of the Jews
or in the eyes of England and the
other nations.
Balfour's name now belongs to
history, and Erez Israel should
have many more places, settlements

and forests and institutions per-
petuating the memory of the great
Britisher who best expressed the
fundamental ideals of his people.
The entire Jewish people through
its only National Fund must per-
petuate the name of its best friend
riming the nations by a suitable
national undertaking on the land
of the National Fund in Erez Is-
rael, our future National Home.

Balfour was the first who brought
to expression that inner hidden
link and gave it reality. He con-
summated the alliance of feeling
and action. From that moment
when the act was revealed and
made public, it left the material
sphere and became part of the
ideal. There does not exist now
merely a political partnership be
tween the English and the Jewish
peoples, but a historical fact, even
though it might he contrary to the
will of both. It is no longer under
the sway of worldly princes, but
in the hands of the guardian an-
gels of England and of the Jews.
Balfour was the one who trans-
ferred the subject from our Jewish
hands to the angels of heaven
above.
The Declaration of Cyrus closed
and sealed the Bible—the history
of our people. The Bible then be-
