heart and soul art! Jewish.
So close, and yet out far away
from America's mainland lies Ha-
waii. It is the first stopping place
on the journey westward to the
Far East and the Orient. Its chief
city, Ilonolulu, is a crossroad of
the world, and is as much an inter-
national city as are New York and
Constantinople. Here one finds
nationals and internationals of
every hue and description; and, as
in every large center, Jews.

There is a sufficient number of
- Jewish families on the island and
enough of material wealth to es-
tablish a synagogue and to instruct
the coming generation in the ideals
and practices of Judaism. There
is also sufficient wealth to main-
tain a burial ground. This at pres-
ent is lacking and Jews are in-
terred in Christian cemeteries or
are cremated. There are approxi-
mately 500 Jews in Honolulu. with
an additional 500 Jewish soldiers
stationed in and around the city.
Out of this number, only 50 fami-
lies are known as Jews to the Jews
themselves.
In one typically Jewish family
when the members were ap-
proached to aid in the movement'
in establishing Jewish religious
I organization, they were emphatic
in denying their race. Another
I Jew denied his affiliations with any
religious body, saying he feared
that by aligning himself with one
group he would lose the business
