Upon their arrival they received a friendly and cordial reception. These first pioneers hod established them- selves and then some time elapsed before other Jewish settlers came. The absence of restrictive laws, perfect freedom and the spirit of liberalism, coupled with the fact that difficulties were placed in the way of immigrants by other coun- tries, were a great factor in mak- 'ing Uruguay desirable to Jewish immigrants. IRWIN'S HOME-MADE PIES 512 STEWARD Order by the Case for Family Use (Editorial in New York Times.) There is no ill thing in Spain but that which can speak. Wickedness is rarely at a loss for cleverness. Oakhill Pie Shop Delicious Beverages White Laundry Co. Dr. Allan, professor of Hebrew at Bradford, in England, is no sensational pamphleteer. Ile is a profound scholar. Lately he has translated Isaiah for a shilling book. The unusual thing about the rendering of the Hebrew is that it reveals the prophet as insets rate in the use of that form of speech known to the erudite as "parano- mania"; to the rest of us, punning. King James's version gives no ink- I ling that the stern augur descend- . ed ever from elevated forms of speech. So far as most people. knew, Isaiah dealt only in sump- tuous figures of speech draped in terrifying solemnity. Yet his problem with the He- brews in the market places was much the same as that which con- fronts the curbstone orator now: how to get the crowd around to listen. To make this clear, Dr. Allan renders the Hebrew into such modern words and phrases as "wash-out" and "fed-up". Ac- cording to his translation the prophet's puns were innumerable: And He looked for justice (mishpat), but behold just vice (mispah). For redress (cedaqah), but behold distress (ce'aqah). What the Bible construes as "if ye will not believe, surely ye shall not he established," the modern au- thority translates as "if ye don't believe, ye won't be-alive." If this construction follows the Hebrew more closely than does the stand- ard text, it is clear that the coming of Isaiah to a town meant enter- tainment thrown in with prophetic warnings. ED.
