hardship entailed in retaining the
orthodox forms and complete wor-
ship. In the past, those who have
neglected the practices have been
held in disdain by the orthodox
group. This resentment is not
wholly justifiable and should have
been avoided. Instead of combin-
ing a way of living with religion,
each faction withdrew and neglect-
ed one another. Many forsook, in
time, their orthodoxy because they
found the easier way less trying,
cheaper and in fashion. Once hav-
ing strayed from the path, they
have not returned. In Kobe and
Yokohama, just as in Honolulu and
in San Francisco and New York,
our Jews are searching for physi-
cal satisfaction and permitting the
religious to come in as a by-pro-
duct, than a striving living
force.
The most vital need of the pres-
ent is to make the Japanese them-
selves better acquainted with Juda-
ism as a religion and philosophy
of life. With the influx of White
Russians who blame their miseries
of Soviet rule on the Jews, there
is a growing danger of a miscon-
ception of the Jewish religion and

the Jews as a people. The mind
that is not taught to differentiate
between the method of propaganda
and hate will succumb to the
temptations of distrust, if there is
not a corresponding element which
attempts to right these impres-
sions. We need to get away from
our isolation and attempt to give
to these people, who have no set
prejudice against Judaism and its
followers, our conception of the
books of the Law and the message
contained therein. In solence there
is the shadow of conviction without
trial and without the hearing that
we would normally receive if there
was a voice raised in defense.
