Mayor-Elect Murphy Hopes to
Unite All Groups Into One
Great Civic Family
By MAYOR-ELECT FRANK MURPHY
As Mayor-elect of Detroit, I am happy to greet
the Jewish people of this community on this festive
occasion and extend to them felicitations. Detroit
owes a great debt to the loyalty, industry and leader-
ship of her Jewish citizens. They have always shown
an active interest and participation in affairs of civic
life, and their constructive co-operation has added
to the prestige, growth and well-being of our city.
My deepest wish is to so conduct the office of mayor
of Detroit that good-will, tolerance and mutual re-
spect will unite all groups into one great civic fam-
ily, having for its goal the great spiritual and ma-
terial progress of our city.
GOVERNOR GREEN GREETS JEWISH
PEOPLE ON THE NEW YEAR
By FRED W. GREEN
Governor of the Stale of Michigan
I am happy to again be afforded the pleasure of
extending felicitations to the Jewish people on the
occasion of their High Holy Days. I have always been
deeply impressed with the solemnity of the Jewish ap-
proach to the New Year and with the spiritual sig-
nificance attached to it. Th e attitude of awe and the
feeling of sacredness with which the Jewish people
regard the inauguration of a new year is an unique one
among the religious conceptions of the world. It
would be well, in my opinion, if all religious groups
paused at this period in their respective calendars for
introspection of their souls and for a spiritual inven-
tory.
It is my earnest hope that the prayers of the Jew-
ish people for health and happiness may be fully
answered in the coming year and that they will indeed
be inscriped in the book of those who walk with God.
SENATOR VANDENBERG LAUDS THE
JEW'S LOVE OF TRADITION
By HON. A. H. VANDENBERG
United States Senator from Michigan.
I am delighted once more to take advantage of the
liberal hospitality of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle
amf join in greetings to Detroit Jewry through the me-
dium of its special New Year's edition.
The genius of our America is the fact that all
religions here find untrammeled liberty of expres-
sion; all races enjoy the common privilege of self-
expression ; and all people are spiritually free.
The soul of America is the composite of these free-
doms; and the strength as well as the joy of this soul
is measured in the fidelities to our common country
which an intelligent appreciation of these liberties
inevitably inspires in its beneficiaries. Jewry, through
past ages, has suffered so much persecution that it
has a background of poignant experience against
which to assess the reality of this priceless American
boon.
Jewry, therefore, is calculated to appreciate more
tangibly than some others precisely what precious
human values hang upon the perpetuity of American
institutions. Thus its patriotism becomes the more
dependable. Added to this quality is the love of home
and family which seems to be Jewry's persistent
characteristic—a factor which too easily disappears
in this rather hectic age in which we live, yet a factor
without which the finer values of life cannot survive.
Among still other Jewish traits apparent to the ob-
server is a love of tradition—a veneration for the
worthwhile ideals that are time-tested. America needs
more just such traditional loyalties--not as a blind
to progress, but as an anchor against dangerous drift.
It is in spirit of acknowledgment of these and kindred
contributions to the composite American life that I
again address the editor of The Detroit Jewish Chron-
icle and by his courtesy extend my best wishes to his
readers and my hopes that these useful contributions
to the sound. sane welfare of our common country may
continue and multiply.
1930—A TEST OF OUR STRENGTH
By AARON KURLAND
President, Jewish National Fund.
The year 1930 is inscribed with events that in their
trend and their pattern compare with the general
trend of Jewish history throughout the years of exile.
Suffering and sorrow, thwarted national aspirations
and hopes deferred, was the lot of world Jewry last
year. Despite all of this it has been a year that has
added proof of the tensile strength of Jewish national
life. The spirit of our people has rebounded from
every aditersity with a strength that revealed itself
upon ever yoccasion. The year 5690 has seen a peo-
ple united in adversity and determined to carry on its
national destiny.

THE PART OF THE JEW IN THE
DEVELOPMENT OF THIS LAND,
ROSH HASHONAH GREETINGS
By SENATOR JAMES COUZENS
On the occasion of Rosh Hashonah, the Jewish
New Year, I have again the privilege through the col-
umns of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle, of sending
greetings to Detroit Jewry.
I do not greet them in any perfunctory manner but
rather because I know of the great progress they are
making in this land of the free. Every day of every
year we see progress made in tolerance. Those who
keep in touch with our economic development know
of the part that the Jews of our country play in it.
I also know of their progress in science, medicine
and surgery, all of which I have had an opportunity of
observing. Therefore, as another year has rolled
around since I last had the opportunity of greeting
you, I am more convinced of my views of the great
part your people can play in the progress and develop-
ment of our country.
It is my sincere hope that they will continue to play
a great part, particularly in the improvement of the
unfortunate economic conditions that we are now
going through.
I therefore wish you a happy and prosperous New
Year.
CONGRESSMAN CLANCY'S GREETING
By HON. ROBERT H. CLANCY
Representative in Congremm from Detroit.
Again we are on the threshold of a new year in the
Jewish calendar. The approach of Rosh Hashonah
finds the Jewish people dropping their everyday tasks
and setting their minds to things spiritual as the old
year passes on. May the good deeds of the Jewish
race during the past year serve as an example for bet-
tering the coming year.
It is my sincere hope that the new year will bring
to your people health, happiness and prosperity. I
hope that it will be rich in the successful accomplish-
ments of your highest aims.
As Representative in Congress it has been my
happy privilege to have assisted in reuniting and keep
united many families of your race and it has indeed
been a pleasure to be of this assistance. I shall con-
tinue to help you in every way within my power and I
assure you all of my most affectionate new year
greetings.
"DO NOT LOSE HOPE"
By RABBI REUBEN HURWITZ
On the first day of our New Year 5691, we repeat
our greetings and wishes. Let the old year and its
curses be ended and let the new year's blessings begin
It is hope, and only hope, that preserved the Jewish
nation. It is hope that has given the Jewish people
strength to survive during all the time of our exile.
During the coming year we have hope for great com-
fort for our people.
Israel's strength is also in peace and unity among
ourselves. As our sages said, "If there would be peace
in midst of Israel, no nation in the world could have
control over them." We are approaching unity. The
Jewish Agency and the peace made in Zionist ranks
with the Brandeis group will give our people great
strength to stand upright and to present a united front
against our antagonists. Unity in Jewish ranks should
gain sympathy for its in the League of Nations and
should find Great Britain more favorably disposed
toward us.
My message to all Zionists and to the Jewish com-
munity is: Do not lose hope and trust in God. He
will furfill the promise to return us to Eretz Israel.
