In the Spirit of ROSH
HASHONAH We
Take Pleasure In
Extending Our
Best Wishes
for a
Happy Holiday
By RABBI JOSEPH EISENMAN
RACHEL LENA DAVIS
The passing year will be recorded in history as a
year of unemployment, industrial depression, earth-
quakes, drought, crime, discontent, restlessness, disre-
spect for law and order and a general disregard for
spiritual and moral values. Not a pretty picture. To
climax it all we note a most heartless shattering of our
hopes in Palestine by the British government.
Is it not time that we pause in the rush of our daily
routine and inquire whence come these ills, what is
their cause, and what is their remedy? During the
past decade we have observed the practical workings
of a philosophy based on materialism. Those who
have preached this doctrine have seen their efforts
bear fruit—a harvest of misery and suffering. At a
time when we possess an over-abundance of all things
essential to human comfort and happiness we see so
much want and privation. Confronted with these facts
is it still possible to accept this doctrine of material-
ism, selfishness and greed? No. To further persist
along these lines is to lapse into a state of moral decay
and final dissolution.
"Turn, 0 Israel, unto the Lord." So spoke the
prophets of old, and therein lies the hope of our salva-
tion. We must return to our Torah, our Scriptures,
our spiritual treasures. We must again strive to do
justice, to love mercy, and walk humbly before God.
We must diligently practice the Golden Rule. Let us
hold fast to our heritage of the past and our redemp-
tion can not be far away.
May the New Year witness the rebirth of Israel
and the fulfillment of our cherished dreams,
71 years old, the matriarch of a
large family, was buried Sunday
afternoon at Machpelah Cemetery,
after impressive services, with
Rabbis S. N. Cutler and E. Aishis-
kin officiating. Born in Wilna, the
deceased came to Detroit 18 years
ago and for the last 10 years has
made her home with Mrs. B, Kra-
mer at 3025 West Grand avenue.
She is survived by seven sons,
Morris, Jacob, Meyer, Abraham,
Isadore, Harry and David; five
daughters, Mrs. II. Kramer, Mrs.
A. Locher, Mrs. S. Helfman, Mrs.
II. Cohen and Mrs. I. Rubin;
grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren. Her husband died
20 years ago. One of the sons,
!lorry Davis, now of Mt. Clemens,
is a World War veteran. Another
son, Rev. Meyer Davis, has been
shochet in Mt. Clemens for the last
24 years.
WELCOMING THE YEAR 5691
By RABBI I. STOLLMAN
Like sunshine after a cloudy, dreary day that dis-
perses the shadows and clears up the skies, so the High
Holy Days approach its with their sacred call for puri-
fication of our souls and hearts that were in dispair
and uneasiness (luring the elapsed year 5690.
The past year added to our great grievances on
account of the outrages in Palestine during the last
months of 5689. Nothing has been accomplished
(luring the passing year to ease our feelings and
strengthen our spirits. The British reply as to the
restoration of the Jewish National 'Ionic in Palestine
was vague as ever. American Jewry, on the other
hand, on whose support and constructive work the
entire nation is depending. faced an economic crisis
which discouraged further achievements. The situa-
tion all around is problematic.
The American Jew looks forward to the high Holy
Days as the redeemer of our spiritual exile that will
bring forth Jewry to new achievements and unity.
The Yomim Neroyim offer us a great deal of help and
stimulation if we would attend them conscientiously.
They are the days of our pleading before the Almighty
for health and prosperity during the coming year and
they also serve as the days of the counting and total-
ing of our deeds and actions, our merits and sins.
But let us remember that we ought to pay atten-
tion to our attitudes towards each other. For noble
deeds of one person elicit the same from others; but
evil doings committed by one person would be the
cause of more evils done by another. We are respon-
sible for each other. We should utilize the Yomim
Neroyim for this Din V'cheshbon that would encour-
age further efforts and aspirations to strengthen our
desired unity.
We are, as the Midrosh expresses, "Ocher I'mayse
breyshith vakedem lepuroniuth." The man is the first
to be stricken by crisis and the last to enjoy spiritual
things. The last is the comment to the rest. Let us
therefore hope that the spirit of "Yomim Neyroim"
will accompany us during the future days to come,
purify our souls and approach us to spiritual things.
Let the blow of the shofar be heard ! Let its voice
for unity and responsibility stimulate us during the
coming year and encourage us to spiritual accomplish-
ments! Let the year 5691 make us forget the strug-
gles and uneasiness of the year 5690!
