This is the season of spiritual stock-tak-
ing.. This is the season when thoughtful
and high-minded Jewish people look into
their souls, and take counsel with their own
hearts.

=1*-

We wish them the vision to see the truth,
strength to face it, and determination to
make the coming year more successful than
all the preceding years in the material,
moral and spiritual sense.

We also wish the Jewish people, every-
where, a happy and prosperous new year.

Praised as Being Unbiased;
D. S. R. Employs
300 Jews.

An unofficial estimate of the num- 1
ber of Jews employed in city de- 1
partments reveals that more than
300 hold jobs in the Detroit Street ■
Railway Department. This num.:
her, distributed among conductors,
motormen, in the construction de-
partments and offices, is believed
to be larger than the number of
Jews in all other city offices cam-
bined.
On the occasion of the highly
satisfactory report made by the D.
S. R. last week, a number of Jew-
ish employes in the 0. S. R. took
occasion to laud Del A. Smith, gen-
eral manager, for his fairness and
ability.
"Mr. Smith is not only one of
the ablest men in executive posi-
tions in Detroit, but is perhaps one
of the very fairest," a D. S. It.
,employ
of a num-
ber r,,7.;;I
e
in
a statement to
The Detroit Jewish Chronicle. "Well
liked for the conscientious manner
in which Mr. Smith conducts his
departments, he is also held in high
esteem for the indiscriminate way
in which he handles his employes.
He knows no racial or religious
lines, and prejudice is alien to him.
Because he is so indiscriminate , his
men will do anything for him. We
doubt whether a finer compliment
can be paid any man."

In the spirit of Rosh llashonah We Extend to All Our
Friends, Customers and Patrons Best Wishes for a
Happy and Prosperous New Year.
