BUTZEL The New Year finds the Jewish group in a very unsatisfactory condition. The tremendous growth of anti-Semitism in Germany and Austria, the threats of pogroms in Rumania, and the economic strangulation in Poland and adjacent countries, certainly are most discouraging. Business depression in America causes preoccupa- tion with personal affairs and corresponding diminu- tion of interest in community matters. England's criti- cal position in other eastern countries has caused a eery indifferent attitude on her part in Palestine. All reports, however, indicate that the Jewish set- tlements in Palestine are consolidating and expand- ing; that the people there are taking root and laying foundations for a fine, independent Jewish life, irre- spective of political conditions. Treaties, declarations, agreements and manifestos do not seem as important as life itself. and may the foes of justice, right and good will triumphantly forge ahead in 5691 A PRAYER FOR ROSH HASHONAH By RABBI MOSES FISCHER 1254 6506 WASHINGTON WOODWARD BLVD. AVE. The Shop of Smart Apparel for Women Am imum mm u.Wm w im mEu Rosh Hashonah Greetings To all of our customers and friends a joyful and prosperous New Year. • .. , CHIC FU R COATS "A God-intoxicated people" is the term by which a great thinker designates and describes the soul- quality and spiritual personality of the Jewish people. , The "God-intoxication" of the Jew manifests it- ' self at no other moment and in no other relation with such intensity and in such sublime grandeur as in the high Holy Days and in the synagogue where the Jew worships his God in the prayers, hymns and medita- tions of the ancient age-sanctified liturgy. Only God-intoxicated people could give that spirit- ual content and interpretation of the New Year as the Jest' gives to its Rosh Ilashonah. Only a God-intoxi- cated people could celebrate the division of times, the beginning of the new year with such heart-stirring, soul-arousing manner and with such keen insight in the value of time, the operations and planes of Divine Providence as the Jew celebrates his Rosh Ilashonah. Only a God-intoxicated people, in the moments of highest religious inspiration and exaltation, and only it.s greatest saints could produce such a "Machzor," such an order of prayer as the Jewish liturgy on Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur. Hearken to the solemn and majestic martyr-prayer of Israel, "Olenu' leshabeach leodon hakol"! With the words of this prayer—the declaration of the Unity Oneness and Allness of God—on their lips, recited with its glorious deathless tune, the martyr-hosts of Israel marched to the pyre, to the torture instruments, to offer their souls amidst inexpressible agonies in order to verify the Oneness and sanctify the name of God! The late Dr. Gotthard Deutsch made the disposi- tion in his will that omitting all other funeral exercises and customs at his bier, the "Malchijoth" prayers,' vibrant with the unity and kingdom of God, shall be recited at his funeral and under its solemn strains his body shall be lowered to his eternal rest. Indeed a "God-intoxicated" people! It is for a spark of this holy flame, for a drop of this Divine-in- toxication in the son of Israel that we should pray on Rosh Ilashonah. One particle of it and Israel will again become "the light of stations, the covenant of peoples." Rabbi Jaffa has already offici- ated at these services for two pre- vious seasons and has exerted a fine influence upon the worshipers through his spirituality and elo- quence. In order that these serv- ices may be self-supporting, the Temple has designated an admis- sion fee of $5 per person. Hun- dreds of people have already an- swered the letters of invitation to these services. Many more have written applying for admission. Those who apply and state they cannot pay the fee have their let- ters treated confidentially and are sent tickets of admission. More than 1,000 people usually attend these supplementary serv- ices. . The rabbis' subjects for the New Year services are: New Year's Eve: Dr. Leo Si. Franklin, The Quest for the Un- attainable"; Rabbi Leon Fram, "The Creative Wish"; Rabbi Philip W. Jaffa, "At the Call of the Sho- far." New Year's Morning: Dr. Leo M. Franklin, "My Brother—the Jew"; Rabbi Leon Fram, "The Jewish Heart"; Rabbi Philip W. Jaffa, "The Idealism of Jewish Family Life." Services at the Temple start punctually at 7 o'clock in the eve- ning and at 10 o'clock in the morn- ing. Both members of the Temple and those who will attend the sup- plementary services are urged to come on time as the doors are closed after the services have begun.
